Selection was by members of the senior class and the faculty. He is business manager of Tlie Clintonian, the yearbook, member of the National Honor Society, and was Clinton High's “Student of the Month.'" He is a member of the bas ketball team and the Block “C” Club, participating in all sports. Cecil is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Davenport of Clinton. He becomes eligible, along with King Teens from other South Caro lina high schools, to be selected to receive a scholarship at Wofford College, Spartanburg. The principal and runner-up will receive four- year scholarships of $2,000 and $1,- 000. respectively Cancer Group Meets In Laurens Laurens, Feb. 1—Some 75 dele- dates from upstate, counties attend ed an area meeting here Saturday to discuss plans for the annual cam paign of the Cancer Society of America. Principal speakers at the meet ing were E. R. Alexander, state di rector of the 1958 Cancer Crusade; Mrs. Paul H. Leonard, executive secretary of the state organization; and Wajter Jones, national field rep resentative of the society. The speakers gave suggestions on how South Carolina might achieve its 1958 goal of $250,000. Brief welcome talks were made by Laurens Mayor Joe Medlock, Laurens County Senator Robert C. Wason; and Laurens County Cancer Crusade Leader Justiif Bridges. Representatives from the follow ing counties attended the meeting held in the Laurens Federal Savings Building: Greenville, Greenwood, McCormick, Oconee, Oconee, An derson, Abbeville, Cherokee, Spar tanburg. Union and Pickens. Spring Football Practice Underway At Presbyterian Forty-two candidates are going through their practice paces in Presbyterian College’s spring foot ball workouts. They reported Monday afternoon and drew equipment to start five weeks of off season drills. The group includes 38 old men and four who. joined the squad for the first time this semester. Coach Frank Jones has laid out a schedule of two hours of practice daily. 3:30 p. m to 5:30 p. nj He is starting off slowly but expects to hit a full pace next week. Assisting him are Line Coach Clyde Ehrhardt and Backfield Coach "Courts Red ford. Only six seniors are being lost to graduation, but four other players failed to return for the second se mester — most of these because of scholastic difficulties. Eighteen let ter men are available among the re turning caididates. Greenwood Firm To Build Laurens County Underpass A contract for the construction of an underpass under South Carolina Route 101 on U. S. Route 276 in Lau rens County has been awarded by ThF"State Highway Department to Sodfh Atlantic Constructors, Inc., of *G reenwood -. - ’Announcement of the contract was made in a letter of award from Chief Highway Commissioner Claud R. McMillan January 29. The award was based on a low bid of $60,960.00 submitted by the Greenwood firm when bids for the project were pub; licly opened in Columbia January 14 Plans indicate tha' the 226-foot-un derpass wil be constructed of rein forced concrete. It w ill be located on a new section of Route 276 be tween Fountain Inn and U. S. Route 221, which was recently placed un der contract for construction. This underpass will be a part of jhe ac cess controlling features on the re located section of the primary high way.
