The farm machinery dealers
term the Fann and Home* Week as
the annual machinery field day
event of South Carolina. The state
fair in Columbia used to be look
ed upon as farm machinery field
day, but has been changed to
Clemson during the Farm and
Home week.
Then there is a big display in
a large tent of modem labor sav
ing home equipment that attracts
the ladies of the home. In fact,
there is somthing of interest to
everybody regardless of how- old
or how young.
You may spend the night in the
dormitories or drive to and from
home each day if you had rather
sleep ait home.
There are many interesting
things to see on a tour of the
campus which win include the"
John C. Calhoun mansion.
One of the big events of the
week will be the 4-H talent show
in the outdoor theater beginning
at 8:00 p. m., Tuesday, August 13.
Perry Simpson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Alex Simpson, of Cross Hill,
will represent Laurens county on
the program as a 4-H club mem
ber. In fact, Tuesday, August 13,
has been named Rural Young
Folks Day. Special efforts will
be made by the committee in
charge of the program to see that
thq young folks visit the exhibit
tent and farm machinery exhibit
on Bowman field; textile products
in the YMCA building; wildlife
exhibit in building back of Long
Hall; and other college buildings.
At the noon hour in the college
chapel music will be presented by
a noted band. Dr. R. F. Poole,'
president of CJemson College, will
welcome the young folks and oth
ers to Clemson. Following Presi
dent Poole’s remarks, a real treat
will be “stutterin’ Sam,” come
dian, who will appear on the noon
hour program. , You don’t want to
miss "stutterin’ Sam.”
In the afternoon the young
folks will be carried on a campus
tour which will include the dairy
processing laboratory, poultry
processing laboratory, horticul
ture processing laiboratory, and
the animal husbandry processing
laboratory. Also the greenhouses,
agricultural engineering and plant
and animal science buildings.
The programs in the mornings
are mainly classroom or group
conferences on various topics
such as crops, livestock, horticul
ture etc. The demonstrations will
be mainly in the afternoon.
On Tuesday afternoon several
demonstrations will be held. Dem
onstration of land forming for
parallel terraces and surface
drainage will be held under the
supervision of the agricultural en-

The agronomy department will
conduct a tour to obsrve agrono
my yield plot experiments. The
animal husbandry department
will give a demons trait ion on
swine managmeent practices at
the swine barn.
The dairy department will hold
a tour to observe irrigation of
coastal bermuda pasture, coastal
bermuda for hay, common bermu
da for hay, and also fescue pas
ture. and dry cows on pasture.
The home economics depart
ment will give an outdoor broil
ing and barbecuing demonstra
tion. The horticulture department
will have a tour to observe se
same and pepper production. The
poultry department will have
demonstrations at the plant and
anamil science building, food in
dustries building and poultry
plant on the Anderson highway.
The program Wednehday after
noon will consist of the state
4-H tractor operators contest, and
a demonstration of the latest in
farm machinery at what is called
the Lawrence bottoms. Also near-
! by in the same bottoms, a demon
stration of irrigation equipment
will be held. The agricultural
nngineering department will have
open house at the USDA South
eastern cotton ginning research
laboratory on Cherry road.
The agronomy department will
have a tour to observe agronomy
experiments. The animal hsband-
ry department will have a demon
stration on grading slaughter and
feeder cattle. Coastal bermuda
experiment will be discused, and
college herds of Angus and Here
ford beef cattle will be observed.
The South Carolina Livestock
Producers Association banquet
will be held at 7:30 p. m. at the
Clemson House, with R. T. Clark
as speaker.

partment will be given on silage
harvesting, handling and storage.
The horticulture department
will conduct a tour on aromatic
tobacco production. Poultry dem
onstrations will be held at the
plant and animal science building,
food industries building, an dat
the poultry plant on the Anderson
highway.

CONTRACT AWARDED
A contract for the grading and
bituminous surfacingof 8.883
miles of secondary roads in Lau
rens County has been awarded by
the State Highway Department to
Ralph W. Crowe, of Woodruff.
The contract was announced
July 15' in a letter of award from
Chief Highway Commissioner
Claude R. McMillan. It was bas
ed on a low bid of $103,487.54 sub
mitted when bids for the work
were publicly opened in Columvia
June 18, and includes several
short stretches of roads.
