Hymn Js Bern
by cunt Conner ^
ri
Qod Be With You
The hymn that was taken from the dictionary
Dr. Jeremiah Rankin, minister of Washing*
*>n, D C's First Congregational Church, wanted
to write a song especially for the conclusion of
Christian gatherings he looked in the diction*
ary for the definition of "good-bye” Finding "a
Contraction of r God be with ye’." he started writ
ing his popular benediction hymn
“It was." said Dr Rankin, "called forth by no
^person or occasion ” He just wrote it for a pur
pose ' / »
That was 18$0 The 52-year-old minister sent
the first verse to>Organist William G Tomer of
Grace Methodist Episcopal'Church Tomer, one
time school teacher, writer and clerk in the
Treasury Department, set the single verse to
music and sent it baejt to Rankin Rankin added
•even verses and a chorus The hymn was pub
lished in a songbook called "Gospel Bells" and
famous Gospel Singer Ira D Sankey Introduced
It on both sides of the Atlantic
, Though Dr. Rankin held both DD and LI. D
degrees, was for 13 years president of Washing
ton's Howard College, wrote scores of hfmns.
•rtldes and poems, this simple benediction song
* • «
God be with you till we meet ogom.
By H.s counsels gu'de, uphold you.
vy » v s'vai • as. a yso-vav, wk* f v-
With His sheep securely dold you;
God be with vQu *ill wf meet ogam.
God be with you t'H we meet ogam,
'Neath His w.ngs protecting hide you.
Do ly manna still provide you;-
God be w,th you till we meet ogam.
God be - *h you till we meet ogam;
Whfw Me r. per I* ‘hick contour'd vOU.
is his only surviving work, and critics have torn
it to shreds. ‘Till we meet." they pointed out, U
repeated 40 times during a single singing. Dr.
Rankin wrote it to be repeated 40 times and
"God Be With You" has been a part of Christian
worship around the world for three-quarters of
a century.
With this, story No 150. this series comes to
a close The research, which began more than
10 years ago. has been tremendous and tedious.
Travel has been necessary from the Atlantic to
the Pacific and from fhe Great Lakes to the Gulf
and correspondence has reached Into foreign
countries Jt has been a delightful job but I
happily write to it "finis "
Response from readers from coast to coast
has been most encouraging and sincerely appre
ciated. But most gratifying of all are expressions
of renewed interest and appreciation of the
grand old time-honored and inspiring hymns of
our churches,'which, on their Individual merits,
they so rightly deserve *
And so. my thanks to Dr. Jeremiah Rankin
for writing what 1 would like to say here;
Put His orms untoiling round you;
God be with you till we meet ogom.
God be with you till we meet ogoin;
Keep love's banner floating o'er you;
Smite death's threot'n ng wave before you;
God^< with.you till we meet ogom.
O'
(Chorus
Till we meet, tilt we meet.
Till we meet at Jesus' feet;
Till we meet, till we meet.
God be with you till we meet ogam
