Furman Band To Give Program In v Laurens April 5 The Furman JUniversity band, Greenville, willipresent a pro gram of poular, modem and clas sical music at the Laurens - high school on Friday night, April 5, at 8 o'clock. The Laurens High School Band Boosters club is sponsoring the appearance. Tommy Cooper, of Clinton, and Oran Nabors, of Joanna, are members of the band. NFA And NHA Hold Annual Banquet At Bell Street High The annual New Farmer’s and New Homemaker's banquet was held in the Bell Street High School j cafeteria. Presiding over the .evening’s 1 program were N. F. A. and N. H. A. I presidents. The welcome address was given by Bennie Lee Dowdy, I md-response by .Mrs. P. V.-Jones. The N. F. A. quartet gave musical I selections. Azalee Crawford read the history of the N. H. A.’s, Joe ! Xayian Taylor gave accomplish- 1 ments and activities for the N. F J A.'s remainder of the school’year. • i Introduction of the speaker was made by Marilyn Taylor, who pre sented L. J. Knighton, principal”of i Midway* Elementary School and president, of life Laurens County Education Association. Mr Knigh-,' ton spoke on the beginning of each organization^, the purposes of which they were founded, and how each fitted into scholastic standards, of the nation. He stated that these organizations were founded for better schools, homos, .and agri cultural li?,e. Remarks were made by Princi- ; i MeQuilla Hpdson, advisors F. j W. Gist and Mrs. C. G. Pruitt. Rec ognition of visitors by Willie Gol den followed the regular closing ceremony of the N. F. A. officers. Ti^e X F A.'s and N’ H. A.’s, along with their guests then enjoyed a* social hour. Mrs. Hattie Boyd Brown Passes After Illness Mrs. Hattie Boyd Brown, 84, widow of Thomas B. Brown, of Rt. 2, Laurens, died early Sunday morning in the Spartanburg Gen eral hospital following two months declining health. ' A lifelong resident of Laurens county, she was the daughter of the late David and Mary Ray Boyd. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist church where she was president of the WMS for 19 years. < Surviving are four sons. Pluss, Byron W., and T. Cecil Brown, all of Laurens; and C. Yates Spartan daughter, Mrs. j7* B. of Raleigh, N. C.; four grand children, and four great-gtend- children. Funeral services were conduct ed Monday at 4:00 p. m. at New Prospect Baptist church by the Rev. A .W. Copedge, the Rev. C.! E. Vermilion, Dr. Edward C. Long and the Rev. B. R. McTeal. Burial was in the chutxh ceme tery. » Pallbearers w-ere H. D. Brown, W. E. Boyd, Pierce Martin, J. H. Moore. B. M. Brown, and Jimmy Boyd. Edwins, Arthur Mc Call, and Lee Dryman. Mr. Collins was a native of Ra ven County, Ga., but had made his home at Lydia Mills for 10 years. He was a veteran of World War I and served overseas. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dovie McCall Collins, of Lydia Mills! two daughters, * Mrs. Earl McElhannon, air Clinton; and Miss Joan CoJMns, of the home; one brother, Miller W. CoUins, 60, were held Saturday afternoon • at Calvary Baptist church by the Rev. J. W. Spillers. Burial was in Rosemont ceme tery. Mr. Collins died early Thurs day morning at the Veterans Hos" pital in Columbia after several months of declining health.
