Conservation
Notes
By J. B. O'DELL
sistance on the Duncan Creek
Watershed project which was
tiled last November.
A prelnminary investigation
was made at the watershed on
last December 17. and 18, by rep
resentatives of the Soil Conserva
tion Service, U. S. Forest Service,
South Carolina State Commission
of Forestry and the South Caro
lina Extension Service. In this
examination the officials looked
at the watershed from a practical
standpoint to determine if the
project was feasible aid economi
cally sound. The soils of the
area, erosion and flood conditions,
land use and land conversions,
possible sites for flood retarding
structures and othdr conditions
were studied. Farmers, city of
ficials and businessmen of the
area were visited and asked
many varied questions on the
project.
The findings of this committee
.were favorable for a multi-pur
pose project. The Board of Dis 1
'trict Supervisors was recently
notified that the application on
the aroject had been approved in
South Carolina and has been for
warded to Washington for con
sideration by the U. S. Depart
ment of Agriculture. The local
supervisors bdlieve that planning
on the project will get underway
during the latter part of this
year, however, there is nothing
definite on it yet. The supervis
ors also want to point out that
the Duncan^ Creek project and
the Bush R/ver Watershed proj
ect are not federal pojects with
local participation but rather LO-
CAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS
WITH FEDERAL PARTICIPA
TION. Local interest and initia
tive will determine Whether I
these projects are successful or!
not.
