McCarity will be heard at the sixth annual FESTIVAL OF CHRISTMAS MUSIC on Sunday, December 9, at 3 P. M. and 8 P. M. at the Spartanburg Memorial Audi torium. Other groups talcing part are Converse College Chorus, Spartanburg High School Chorus and Spartanburg Sym phony Orchestra. Guest soloists are Byrd Austell Cassibry and Jphn Richards McCrae. This will be the first appearance of the Clenuon singers on the annual Festival of Christmas program. University More than one-third of the Uni versity of South Carolina’s 4.615 students enrolled for the fall se mester are Baptists, according to figures released by Registrar Hen ry O. Strohecker. Some 1,316 men and 313 wom en, for a total of 1,629, have indi- v cated preference for that denomi nation. The Methodist church comes next in .popularity, Mr. Strohecker said, with a total of 1.128 stu dents, 869 then and 259 womeh. Third is the Presbyterian. 531^ in all; 368 men and 163 women. There are 380 Episcopalians, ‘ 25S men and 122 women. 252 Luther ans, 189 men and 63 wornep. 221 Roman Catholics, 172 men aAd 49 women; 76 of the .Jewish faith, 49 men and 27 women: and 38 £reek Orthodpx, ’1 men and 7 women. Twenty-one other denominations *nave a total of 1’2 student mem bers, 103 men and 29 women. Forty men and eight women indi cated as preference “Protestant” while another .18(T indicated no preference. Phone 74 |Classes In Home Nursing Scheduled For Early Spring Women in I^aurehs county wjll soon have the opportunity for training in home nursing care of the sick and injured ahd in"civil defense • techniques,' according io Dr. J. C. Sease, director of the Laurens County Health Depart ment. The program is part of a na tional program designed tq re lieve professional nurses of du^ ties others can perform in the event of a disaster, of any ‘kind should oqcur. Pointing out that one graduate nurse tan supervise 25 women trained in home nurs ing, Dr Sease'says .that the coun ty’s 48" graduate nurses could di : rect the work of 1200 trained vol unteers and at the same time util ize their professional skill to re lieve a critical shortage of doc tors. Mrs. Martha . Lawson, public health nurse of the Laurens Lau rens County -Health Department, is in charge of the program in this county. Mrs. Lawson is one of fourteen nurses from over the state who attended the teacher- trainer course in Columbia in June under the direction of Miss Bess E. Dalton, of the Atlanta .office of the American Red Cross. Mrs. Lawson expects to complete the course in February when Miss Dalton returns, tb Columba. In the meantime, Mrs. Lawson has’ been busy conducting classes of her own in home nursing care. One class has been held at Watts- vil e and one at Joanna. •Jn the early spring Mrs. Law- son will begin the first of two teacher-trainer courses with ten women students enrolled for each course. Upon completion of these two courses, Laurens coun ty will have .twenty-One quali fied teachers for the many hun dreds of women students expect ed to enroll in the home nursing ■classes during the coming year In urging the women of the ‘county to take advantage of this unusual opportuntiy to equip themselves not only for patriotic service if and when needed, but alsofor . better family service, Mrs. Lawson explains that the seven two-hour classes comprise a 'nationally uniform course which* makes it possible to start the course in one county or state and Complete it in another. For example, a woman student finish ing three classes in Laurens or Clinton can enter the fourth class' in Charleston or Califor nia and complete the course and leceive her certificate there. Instruction and demonstra tions in the following subjects are included in the seven classes: 1. When Sickness ccurs. 2. The Patient Goes to Bed. 3. The Clean arid Well-Groom ed Patient. 4. Food and Medicine Order ed by the Doctor. 5. Simple Treatments Ordered by the Doctor. 6. Summary and Review—Re lating Care of the Sick to Control of Communicable Diseases. 7. Services of the Local Health Department. The statewide program is un der the direction of Mrs Hettie H. Rickett, State Supervising Nurse of the State Board of Health, and is sponsored by the State Board of Health in cooperation with lo cal chapters of the American Red Cross, Civil Defense, and tfie South Carolina State Nurses’ As sociation. McCall, director of the examinations, said that applicants could secure necessary blanks and Information by writing to him at the state department The examinations themselves will be given February 9 at va rious testing centers throughout the st^te. The common examina tion, required for certification, will be the morning of February 9 and the optional examinations, in cluding a new test in music edu cation will be in the afternoon.
