Get Refund On Gasoline
Many farmers are calling at
the county agent’s office these
days to get proper forms to file
for the two cents per gallon fed
eral tax refund on gasoline used
on the farm for farm machinery.
The application for this refund
tax to cover period from Janu
ary 1, through June 30, and filed
with the Internal Revenue Ser-

vice, Columbia, Ion or before Oc
tober 1.
Also there js a South Caro linn
refund tax on gasoline used by
farm machinery of five cents per
gallon of gas. This week a farm

ISM Soil Bank
The 1956 acreage reserve pro
gram, known as the soil bank,
was explained at a meeting in
Columbia June 20, attended by
representatives of Clemson col
lege extension service, Soil Con
servation service, and the ASC
service. The instructions for the
program are only for the remain
der of the year 1956.
The purpose of the acreage re-
service program is to assist farm
ers to divert a portion of their
crop land from the production of
excessive supplies of agricultural
commodities by compensating
them for reducing their acreage
below their farm acreage allot
ment, which in this county would
be cotton and wheat. The soil
bank was passed by Congress
and signed by the president of
the United States May 26 and it
became effective May 2B.
No person shall be eligible for
compensation under the acreage
reserve program with respect to
any farm on which the acreage of
cotton exceeds his 1956 farm ac
reage allotment. Also the acreage
of wheat in case a farm has an al
lotment or not exceeding 15 acres
whichever is the largest.
If a farmer plants more than
his allotment (tha tis, cotton and
wheat) he is not eligible to par
ticipate in the acreage reserve
program, unless he is in compli
ance on both acreage allotments.
However, if a farmer has two
separate farms (work sheets) he
may comply on one farni by stay
ing within his acreag^allotment,
and exceed his acreage allotment
on the other, and participate in
the acreage reserve program on
the farm on which he stayed
within his acreage allotment.
It is called to your, attention
that the farmer who wishes to
receive support price must com
ply with acreage allotment, par
ticularly cotton and wheat on all
farms. In other words, the ac
reage reserve program is one pro
gram and the support price is
another program.
Farmers will be required to file
application with the ASC office
to participate in the acreage re
serve program, and these appli
cations must be filed not later
than July 20.
The farmer must designate,
which the ASC field man will re
cord on a map, the acreage of
land a fanner wishes to put in
the acreage reserve program on
which he will receive payment.
This acreage reserve may be left
idle or put into close growing
crops. However, they may not
be grazed or harvested in any
form. Any farmer wishing to
destroy cotton and take part in
the acreage reserve program by
reducing his acreage, must de
stroy the crop by July 31.
Acreages put into acreage re
serve program connot receive a
soil building practice payment
under the present program in
addition to the acreage reserve
program.
In other words ,the farmer jnay
get payment only once on th eac-
reage reserve program.
Farmers with new cotton allot
ments cannot participate in the
acreage reserve program by de
stroying their cotton.
A minimum of ten per cent of
allotted acres, or five acres,
whichever is the largest, is the
maximum and minimum to be
put into the acreage reserve pro
gram. Fanners participating in
the acreage reserve program re
tain their present cotton acre
age allotment for 1956.
On the farms where share
croppers are interested in the ac
reage allotment, no schemes or
devices, to defeat the purposes of
agreement,^ will be permitted. In
other words, no persqn entering
ipto art 'agreement shall use
schemes or devices whatsoever
that would tend to defeat the
purpose of the program. If a
farmer ^rks croppers, the acre
age reserve program benefits are
to be divided among the land
lord and croppers in proportion
to the division of the crop.
As to. the payment to be re
ceived, In some cases the field
representative will use estimates
as to the 1956 production of cot
ton, and in other cases the nor
mal yield will be taken ' under
consideration for the farm. Cot
ton acreage, on which a poor
stand has been obtained, if di
verted to the acreage reserve pro
gram will not be valued over
$6 00 per acre. The value of 15
cents per pound of lint cotton
times the accepted yield on the
acreage reserve will be the value
per acre the afrmer will receive
In other words, ft an estimated
yield of 300 pounds of lint cot
ton is agreed upon, the farmer
will receive $45.00. Lower yields
would be less money per acre
and high yields would be more
money per acre.
The ASC office will have the
proper forms in the near future
and further information will be
given when the forms ar avail
able.
4-H Boys On Judging Toam
R. J. Bennett, assistant county
agent, and the 4-H junior dairy
judging team are taking part in
the Piedmont 4-H dairy judging
contest today, June 27, on the
Sky land Jersey farm near Roe
buck, Spartanburg county, and
farms in Pnion county.

David Brown, sons of Mr. and
Mrs. D. Eugene Brown, Bailey
