Cotton Seed Treatment Controls
Thrip
Cotton seed treatment demon
strations conducted on the farms
of E. J. Sloan, Fountain Inn, Dur
bin community, and W. P Dick
son, Clinton, Hopewell commun
ity, has shown that treating cot
ton seed with Thimet before
planting will control thrip dam
age. Thimet is a poisonous ma
terial applied at the rate of eight
pounds to 100 pounds of cotton
seed. The poison is absorbed
into the roots and stems of the
young cotton plants and killS'the
thrip sucking the sap of the
plants.
A meeting on the two farms
was held Friday mprning, June
15, of Extension workers of
Clemson college, representatives
of the manufacturer and the dis
tributor of the poison, and farm
ers to observe and study the re
sults. The tour also included
similar demonstrations conducted
on farms of West Kellette, Foun
tain Inn, and H. F. Long, New
berry.
The Thimet demonstrations
will -be? closely observed through
out the season and production
yield recorded.
Boll Waovila Out
Boll weevils are found in cot
ton fields throughout Laurens
county. Application of dust or
spray of recommended material
should be applied at once to con
trol these early weevils coming
out of hibernation, and before,
they puncture and lay eggs in the
early shapes.
Not too many farmers applied
the important dust early for
thrip control, and it is hoped that
the control of boll weevil will
begin on schedule, and kept un
der control throughout the sea
son.
Prospects are good for our cot
ton crop, although a few farmers
have broken stands due to dry
weather.
Phoaphata Fretilixers Help
Prevent Bloat
Dr. H. P. Cooper, I Agronomist,
South Carolina Agricultural Ex
periment Station, told a group of
farmers last week on a pasture
touc on the farms of W. W. Chap-
and Caroland Angus Farm of
Spartanburg county, that liberal
amount of phosphate fertilizer
applied to pasture grasses would
aid greatly in the control of
bleat-in eattle;
Dr. Cooper pointed out in his
remarks that observations show
ed clearly that on newly cleared
land which has not received suf
ficient phosphorus to balance the
nitrogen supply, bloat may be
a critical problem. Legume crops
in semi-arid climates on phos
phorus-deficient soils may result
in a very high incidence of bloat.
Dr. Cooper explained the rela
tion of phosyhorus and nitrogen
by stating that “where the nitro
gen Content of the plant is much
in excess of five pounds of nitro
gen to on© pound of phosphoric
acid, there may be a bottleneck
created at the point in the organ
ic synthetic mechanism where
the phosphorus enters into the
constituents producing the essen
tial nucleo-proteins. Behind the
bottleneck level in the bio-chemi-
cay synthetic mechanism created
by phosphorus deficiency, there
mav be an accuniulation of the
cyanogenetic glucoside which
may form deadly poisonous prus
sic acid or HCN in cretain grass
plants such as sorghum."
On the farm of Mr. Chapman,
coastal bermuda plantings made
in 1953, 1954 and 1955 wer e ob
served. On five acres of old coast-
al bermuda, Mr. Chapcan cut
five tons of quality hay per acre
besides grazing on the . same ac
reage 30 head of beef cattle for
two months.
On the CarolaAd Angus farm,
coastal bremuda and fescue pas
tures were observed. On the farm
is an outstanding Angus beef
cattle herd. One of the herd bulls
