Mon Wrecks Cor

Laurens, Feb. 15—A man listed
1, was in Laurens county jail here
as Lee R. Smith, of Laurens, Rt.
tonight following a wild chase by
highway patrolmen that began in
Fountain Inn and ended in the
wrecking of Smith’s car in Lau
rens. ^
State Highway Patrolman J. C.
Clardy said that Smith, driving a
1952 Ford, passed through Foun
tain Inn at a high rate of speed.
He pulled has patrol car up to the
speeding vehicle and tried vainly
to bring the driver to halt. How
ever, the driver did not stop and
Patrolman Clardy followed. Hr
said Smith’s car attained speeds
of 95 miles per hour at times. The
patrolman radioed to Patrolman
B. A. Blume who took up the
chase at the Laurens county line
Rounding a curve in Laurens at
a high rate of speed, Smith’s car
collided with one driven by
George Edward Wesson, Jr.
in Columbia, said a branch of the
Ground Observer Corps has been
set up in Laurens on the second
floor of the municipal building.
Personnel of the branch office
will be Sgt. Theo, T-Sgt. Gerald
O. Oberlin, and Ale Don Jewell
from the 467 th Ground Observer
Corps, Detachment 10.

enlist civilian volunteers to spo<
aircraft in the defense of
United States.

Mrs. Brooks Dunaway.
Miss Catherine Dunaway led

games after which a salad plate
was served by the hostess.
