Minimum Lint
Acreage Asked
Washington, Jan. 31 — Sen.
Strom Thurmond (D-SC) is back
ing a proposal to guarantee every
cotton farmer a minimum quota
of four acres or 80 per cent of 4ts
highest planted acreage in the
past three years.
Thurmond said 16,830 South
Carolina cotton farmers had a
.quota of less than five acres in
1955, and some had less than two
acres. He agreed with Sen. John)
Stennis (D-Miss) author of the
four-acre bill, that such cuts are
‘liquidating the small farmer.”
The proposal is being consider
ed by the Senate Agriculture
Committee.

Eden r Forgets To
Propose Toast To
President of U. S.
—♦— —
Washington, Jan. 31 — Sir An
thony Eden tirpped over one of
the diplomatic niceties at a state
dinner last .night. The British
Prime Minister did not propose
the customary toast to President
Eisenhower.
It was assumed that Eden, a
veteran diplomat, forgot his clos
ing lines in addressing the dinner
guests. He paid tribute to Eisen
hower but sat down without of
fering a toast.
Eisenhower did not attend the
dinner, given by Secretary of
State Dulles. The President is
foregoing the social activities
connected with Eden’s current
visit.
Just before Eden spoke, Dulles
had concluded his remarks to the
gathering by proposing a toast to
Queen Elizabeth.

uary, 1955, levels.
The department also reported
that the fanners’ production and
living costs rose one per cent be
tween mid-December artd mid-

eral tax;' of two cents a gallon on
gasoline they buy. The new legis
lation would exempt them from
the tax on gas and special fuels
when they are used ter agricul
tural purposes. Fuels used on the
highway would still,be taxable.
The bill now goes to the Sen
ate where it is expected to meet
with the same speedy approval.
Republican Leader Martin of
Massachusetts replied that the re
lief was not voted in 20 years of
Democratic administrations and' *
only came after Eisenhower had
asked for it.
