Columbia, Dec. 23 —Tree farm
acreage in South Carolina soar
ed upward by 23,851 acres today
with announcement by the
state’s farm committee that it
has certified nine new tree
farms.
The pine additions bring to 173
the number of tree farms in the
state with total acreage of 1,-
290,427 acres.
“More and more landowners
are coming to realize the import
ance of growing trees as a crop,”
said Vern H. Cutler, - fdrester for
Argent Lumber Co., of Hardee-
ville, who is chairman of the tree
farm committee. “The program
is steadily moving forward and
these people are benefiting them
selves as well as the wood-using
industries which depend upon
outside sources for their raw ma
terials.”
Tree farms certified by the j
committee ranged in size from 38
to 12,7D0 acres. To be certified as
a tree farmer, a landowner must
demonstrate ability and willing
ness to manage his woodland un
der good forestry practice for
continuous production.
The tree farm program is spon
sored by the South Carolina For
est Industries Committee, an or
ganization of wood-using indus
tries, with cooperation of the
South Carolina State Commis
sion on Forestry and the Clem-
son College Extension Service.
It is part of the American Tree
Farm System, operating in 40
states. *

lands of the following tree farm
ers, listed with acreage by coun-
! ties:
