Blessed Assurance
A minister's daughter writes a tune
The young women knocked on • door In Brook
lyn. She was In her early 90a but. ever since she
was a small girl, Phoebe Palmer had played the
organ. And her father, noted Evangelist Dr. Walter
C. Palmer, encouraged her to write music. That’s
why the went over to the modest Brooklyn home
that day In 1971 She had written a piece of music
and the wanted some words for It
"Bless your dear tool.’’ a epry little woman In
her early 90t said u she opened the door. In her
youth Miss Palmer’s boat had written some of the
biggest soag hits In their day. But In IBM Com
poser William Bradbury suggested that her talent
thou Id be a blessing to the world if she would
write songs for the church. Then and there,
when she was «« years old, the little poateea
dictated her drat hymn. In a few months the world
singing "Pass Mo Not, O Gentle Saviour,”
the Perishing," "Safe la the Anas of
Jesus" and scores of others from her pen and aha
never wrote another secular song. Nor did she ever
write a hymn-poem without first kneeling In prayer.
She prayed, too, that her church songs would save
a million souls. That's a lot of souls, but that little
woman wrote a lot of songs for the church—nearly
MOg—before she died la IMS.
"Bless your dear soul,” the little woman said to
Phoebe Palmer, "let me hear your music.” So Miss
Palmer played her composition on the parlor ar-
gaa Looking around, she saw the little woman
kneeling in prayer so she softly played her musk
playing bar tune a third time when

married Joseph jPalrfleld Knapp, founder of th«
Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. The author of the
words Is listed as "Fanny J. Crosby"—that’s because
Miss Palmer's host was none other than the famous
hymn-writer.
When Fanny Crosby asked Phoebe Palmer to
write while she dictated, the young woman under
stood. She knew that "Aunt Fanny" could not write
very well She knew that In 1990, when she was
Just 9 weeks old, a cold had settled in her eyes and
a country doctor had recommended a mustard poul
tice. So, while blind little "Aunt Fanny" Groeby
dictated, Phoebe Palmer took down these word-

organizations.” The catalog lists
37 films, several of which are In
full color.
One of them, “Family Affair,”
portrays interesting everyday fam
ily situations centering around the
use of the* telephone in a busy
household. Another, “Music in
Motion,” combines the’ beautiful
music of Zino Franc esc aril, famed
violinist, and the BeB Telephone
orchestra with a dramatic story
of research In the field of sound.
Another, "For Progress . . . Call
Dixie,” deals with southern post
war progress and the part played
by telephone service. Another,
‘"Ihe Transistor," tells the dram
atic story of the transistor, mighty
electronic marvel invented by the
Bell Telephone laboratories.
