McQueen, a 1954 graduate bf Presbyterian college, U. S. Congressman Ed ward P. Boland (D-Mass.), and U. S. Congressman Harold C 0s- tertag (R-N. Y.) and Mrs. Oster- tag were seized Monday in East Berlin by Red police, and were held by them for four hours. Lt. McQueen was serving as military escort to the Congressmen while on a tour of Communist dominat ed East Berlin Lt. McQueen, a native of Mul lins, stated that they were arrest ed for carrying a two-way radio into the “German Democratic Re public,” which is against their law. A Red policeman stopped their car and demanded the keys. Lt. McQueen said he turned them over at gunpoint When he tried to inform U. S. headquarters via the radio, a second policeman drew a gun and stopped him. They were taken to Soviet au thorities who seemed to give little attention to the fact that two of the four were U. S. Congressmen After much delay the affair was worked through the police chain of command up to the highest Soviet authorities. The Soviets turned the four Americans over to the U. S. pro vost marshal. The affair has pre cipitated the question of the statu* of American, British, and French troopa with regards t? East Ger man law. Maj. Gen. Charles L Dasher, Jr., made a “vigorous” protest to the Societ commander of the city about the seizure of Lt. McQueen and the Congressmen. 14.
