J. Mell Blakely,
Former Resident,
Passes At Hospital
J. Mell Blakely, 74, died early
last Thursday morning at Hays
hospital after several months of
declining health and a six weeks
critical illness.
He was a native of Laurens
county but had made his home
in Ellenton most of his life.
He was a son of the late J.
Warren and Martha Henry
Blakely of the Yarborough Mill
section. He is survived by one
sister and one brother, Mrs. Mrs.
O. T. Newman of Woodruff, and
Blufe W. Blakely of Clinton.
Funeral services were con
ducted Friday at 3:00 p. m. at
Gray Funeral Home by Dr. C.
Bynum Betts. Interment was in
Rosemont cemetery.
Pallbearers were William
Blakely, Alvin Trammell, F^te
Ramage. John H. Hudgens, B. R.
T. Todd, and Bluford Copeland.
Mrs. Lown Appointed
Garden Center Chairman
Mrs. Buren Lown has been ap
pointed Garden Center chairman
for the gardens clubs in the city.
Mrs. Lown will work with mem
bers from the four clubs in main
taining the center in the gift de
partment at Belk’s. The center
serves as a display and informa
tion booth with the clubs furnish
ing arrangements and various ar
ticles and magazines.
Mrs. Mamie Blease
Passes At Home
Mrs. Mamie Louise Blease, 47.
wife of Cole L. Blease, Sr., died
Friday afternoon at her home,
805 Mus grove St., following sev
eral months of declining health.
A native of Laurens cuonty,
Mrs. Blease was a daughter of
the late A. B. and Rebecca Jack-
son Matthews. She had made
her home in Clinton for 20 year*
and was a member of Calvary
Baptist church.
Marie Gary Passes
Suddenly At Home
Marie Henry Gary, respected
colored woman of the commun
ity, wife of Craig Gary, died sud
denly Friday morning, October
7, at her home on W. Centennial
street. Funeral services were
held Sunday afternoon at
Friendship A. M. E. church.
Besides her husband she is
survived by a son, Craig Cornel
ius Gary, Jr., of Brooklyn, N. Y.,
and an adpoted daughter, Caro
lyn Gary.
Marie had many friends
among both white and Negro
citizens of the community, both
she and her husband being high
ly regarded.
16 Die In Traffic
Accidents In Week

Sixteen persons lost their lives
in traffic accidents on South
Carolina highways, and 119 were
injured in 433 accidents October
2 through October 8, according
to the state highway depart
ment's weekly accident report.
The 1955 traffic death toll in
the state now stands at 514. This
is 95 more than for the same pe
riod last year.
