Rudolph Matthews, of Ches ter, has been employed by Whit ten Village for shop activities on the campus, it has been stated by school officials. Mr. Matthews is well prepared for the work and has been highly recommended by the superinten dent of the Chester city schools. He is a World War I veteran. His wife, a trained nurse, is a na tive of Ireland. Childrens Library Adds New Books Mrs James S Gray, librarian at the Clinton library, has called to the attention of patron* the arriv-1 al of new books including the reg ular Literary Guild additions. New books are purchased with | PTA library' funds and contribu tions from the Kiwanis club. Chapter Gets Registered Animal The Sears-Roebuck registered White Face Hereford bull from Clemson college has been award ed by the federation to the local New Farmers chapter here. The animal will serve the community in a cooperative breeder program among the Ne gro farmers and agriculture stu dents to bring in a new outcross blood line and to promote a bet ter type beef animal for market ing and show purposes. At present the animal is locat ed at the Booker T. Calhoun farm on highway 76 at Young’s Cross- Roads. Farmers desiring ser vice may contact F. W. Gist, ad visor to the local chapter. Sheriff Holds Negro Woman For Assault On Burts fThc BANKER'S STORY Laurens, Aug 25 — Supervisor Bennie B Blakely said the selec tion of a successor to J. O. Strib- ling, superintendent of the Coun ty Home, who died Saturday, would be made after the first of the year. Mr. Stribling, like other county employes, was employed on an an nual basis, he said, and his term would not have expired until the end of this year. In the meantime, he said, Mr. Stribling’s duties will be performed by his eon, Albert Stribling, with the assistance of Mrs. Stribling, who had been per forming the duties during Supt Stribling’s sickness. Mrs. Jackson Accepts Church Position ¥ ^ Mrs. Weldon T. Jackson has accepted a position as secretary in the office of Broad Street Methodist church. Office hours are 8 30 until 11:30, Monday through Friday. PRINCE IS CORPORAL Jesse H. Prince. Jr., of 306 Ferguson St., was promoted to corporal in the U. S. Army Re serves this week. Prince is a member of Com pany L 323rd Infantry, a Clinton Army Reserve unit. The office of Sheriff W. L. Lowery stated yesterday they are holding a Negro woman. Bertha Beatty, in $300 bond for assault and battery of a high and aggra vated nature on W. M. Burts of this city. m L » Campbell Farm Shown Last Week The mystery farm shown last week was that of Ed Campbell on Route 2, Clinton. The farm is lo cated on the Union road which turns right about four miles out Jhe Spartanburg highway. Mrs. Edna Lawson called The Chronicle and correctly identified the farm. SHERIFF AND MRS. LOWERY VISITING IN RALEIGH Sheriff and Mrs. W. L. Lowery are visiting Mrs. Lowery’s sister and brother-in-law. Major and Mrs W B Lentz in Raleigh. N. C. Major Lentz is an officer in the North Carolina state highway patrol. The Lowerys are expected to return Friday.
