On June 17, at Joanna the guessing game and argument started. In the bottom of the ninth inning with Greenwood leading 6-5 becatisi of seven Clinton errors, Clinton started a rally that ended in a rhu barb. Benji Timmons singled to start the rally. While “Peanut” Smith was at the plate, Timmons stole second and continued on to third on Yates’ bad throw into center- field. Smith then grounded out. Timmons scored the tying run on a wild pitch. C $10.85 $19.55 PHONE 18 was at bat, Sease stole second and reached third because of the Greenwood catcher’s bad throw into centerfield. This set the stage for the rhubart>. At this point Greenwood changed its strategy. The strat egy called for the intentional passing of June Raines to first base. Pete Yates, the Greemviod catcher, made the mistake of standing outside the catcher’s box, which is forty-three inches wide directly behind the plate, in order to catch the balls to walk Raines. On such a rare cir cumstance as this, the plate um pire did not call the balk on the catcher . Since the intentional walk to Raines put men on first and third, Greenwood strategy was to walk Cranford to load the bases, hoping for a double play to end the inning. When Cnyi ford was batting, Pete Yates was over three feet from the plate. On the second ball to Cranford, the plate umpire called time and consulted the base umpire. On the third ball to Cranford both the plate umpire and the base umpire called a balk because the Greenwood catcher was out of the catcher’s box. This brought Sease home with the winning run. Our friend from across the Sa luda River, Eddie Ervin, of the Greenwood Index-Journal, called for a code of ethics concerning 1 j this balk between these two | rivals. The Greenwood catcher actually received six chances to abide by the rules before he was i penalized by the balk. What more could you ask for? Also, maybe our friend should talk to the Greenwood coach about his code of ethics. If we are going to second guess this ball game, we should carry the second guessing all the way. Actually, Clinton should never have bat ted in the bottom of the ninth. All the six runs that Greenwood made were scored because of seven Clinton errors. If Clinton had not made these errors, they would have been victorious at the end of the top of the ninth by a score of 5-0. Did the Green wood coach go to the mound and say to the Clinton team, “Muchas gratis for the six runs you gave us’’? No, he did not, but he sure ly started quite a controversy over one run. Last Friday night over at Greenwood, the plate umpire called three balks on the Clin ton catcher because he jumped out of the catcher’s box to catch bad pitches and wild pitches, balk on the Clinton pitcher and when the umpire called the first the fourth of the game. Hall be gan the eighth inning by ground ing out from the pitcher to first base. Bennett then doubled. Phillips singled Bennett home and reached second on the throw to the plate. With the pickoff play on. Pitcher Billy Sease wheeled to throw to second from his stretched position, but held 1 the ball when the second base- man was not at the second base bag. The plate umpire called this a balk and sent the runner to third. Clinton then appealed the play because this particular play was not specifically stated as a balk in section 8.05 of the official rule book. Since the plate umpire would not listen to the appeal, Clinton finished the game under protest. Would our friend from across the river call for a code of eth ics on this game? It wouldn’t matter how many words sports writers print, the national game of baseball wuold not lose its color, pageantry, rhubarb, and arguments. At this date no decision has been handed down on the pro test of last Friday night’s game. An appointed committee rules on this protest. This committee is appointed by Mr. Martin K. Rosefield, Director of Junior Legion Baseball for the state of South Carolina. Society... (continued from page 7) at the reception. Dianne Asbill and Beth Meggs served mints.
