Kiwanis Is City's Oldest;
3 Charter Members Live
Was Founded In 1923 With
B. H. Boyd As First President
(This article on the Kiwanis
club, Clinton’s oldest civic or
ganization, is the first of a se
ries of articles on civic clubs of
this city which will be carried in
The Chronicle.)

In a year when Kiwanis Inter
national puts special emphasis on
its 40th anniversary, the Clinton
Kiwanis club marks its 32nd
birthday of service. It is Clin
ton’s oldest civic organization.
The years have seen a steady
growth from the original 20
members to the present mem
bership of 74, and they have
brought an outstanding record of
service to the community.
July 17 will be the official an
niversary date of the Clinton
Kiwanis club. It was on that
day back in 1923 that the organi
zation received its charter, pre-
sentde by .the Columbia club.
That first meeting place was in
the basement of Simpson’s Fur
niture Store, with the 20 charter
members present, and they elect
ed the late Butler H. Boyd the
first president.
At this time, there were only
three or four Kiwanis clubs in
South Carolina, so the Clinton
organization ranks among the
oldest in the state.
Only three of those 20 charter
members remain today. They
are L. B. Dillard, R. E. Fergu
son, Sr., and F. C. Pinson. The
most recent loss from among the
original group came with the
death of W. W. Harris.
A favorite meeting place dur
ing the early years of the club
was a room in the Clinton Hotel
which is now occupied by Ma
son’s Barber Shop. From here
the meeting place shifted to the
hotel’s central dining room, then
to the Presbyterian College din
ing hall and immediately after
World War II and finnaly to the
present location at the Hotel
Mary Musgrove.
One of the biggest single
events in the history of the Clin
ton group came in July, 1948,
when the club cleebrated its 25th
anniversary, A salute of achieve
ment was presented through a
historical program which cover
ed the life of the club and was
designed to reflect its spirit, its
civic undertakings, fellowship,
community goodwill and support
of worthy projecst.
One of the biggest of these
projects through the years has
been the annual support given
Thornwell orphanage. This sup
port was re-emphasized only last
month when the club presented
Thornwell President Malcolm
Macdinald with a check for more
than $1,000—the amount raised
through the successful Commun
ity barebcue-bazaar.
The club also maintains Boy
Scout Troop 116 and gives its
support to the children's library
located on the second floor of
the Presbyterian College library
building, providing this worthy
civic function with books sev
eral times each year. Among
the other Kiwanis projects are
the sending of representatives to
Palmetto Boys State and Girls
State, and assistance in the city
recreation program.
Clinton has contributed its
share of fhe leaders to the Ninth
Division of the Carolinas District.
Four men of this club have serv
ed as lieutenant-governor of the
division: John Holland Hunter,
in 1935, W. W. Harris in 1941,
Ratchford Boland in 1950, and
now Reese Young in 1955.
The present officers of the
Clinton Kiwanis club are: Robert
M. Vance, president; Reese
Young, vice-president; and G.
Edward Campbell, secretary-
treasurer. They follow in the
footsteps of a long line of offi
cers, headed by these presidents:
