206 Persons May Be
Killed By Autos
Christmas Week-End
High speed and alcohol, peren
nial killers of American motorists
and pedestrians, once again will
head the list of causes of highway
Vitalities during Christmas week
end, when at least 205 persons
will die in crashes caused by
those two factors alone.
According to a prediction re
leased by the Association of Cas
ualty and Surety companies, the
probable death toll from acci
dents involving high speed or
speed too fest for conditions will
amount to 124 victims. Alcohol,
taken too freely by both drivers
and pedestrians, is expected to
accout for another 81 victims.
Before the end of the week
end,. which starts officially at 0
p. m. December 23 and closes at
midnight December 26, there also
will, be 37 deaths in accidents
caused by failure to keep to the
right of a centerline, 26 more for
failure to yield the right of way
and another 23 in crashes caused
by overfatigued drivers or driv
ers actually asleep at the wheel.
In releasing the prediction,
Thomas N. Boate, manager of
the Association's accident pre
vention department, pointed to
overzealous hpliday celebrants as
principal offenders in the acci
dent picture.
“This year, as every year,” Mr.
Boate said, “the party-goer who
just doesn’t know when to quit
will substitute grief for Chris*-
mas joy when he kills himselg,
or someone else, on the way
home from an overindulgent cel
ebration. Any driver who drinks,
even though he may be obvious
ly drunk, is a potential killer on
the highway. It would be well
for hosts and guests alike to re
member that, when planning a
party during Christmas season.”
BOILED MILK
If a pinch of soda is stirred into
milk that is to be boiled it will
keep the milk from curdling.
Military Draft
Call Cut Sat
For Next Year
Washington, Dec. 20—Secretary
' of Defense Wilson said today that,
Partly because of greater “oppor
tunities for peace,” 4 draft calls
will be halved next year and the
armed forces will be reduced by
408 000 men by June 1956.
The reduction will bring total
strength down to 2,815,000 from
the current figure of 3,218,000
registered last month
Wilson told a Pentagon news
conference the decision to cut
military manpower was made “in
the last few weeks ... by the
President after a review” of all
factors.
The secretary also announced
that the 1st Marine division will
be returned from Korea to the
West Coast, as soon as shipping is
assembled. It will be replaced by
one of 'rro army divisions in Ja
pan.
The Army, Navy and Marine
corps are all to be trimmed in
1 the n6xt 18 months; only the Air
Force will be increased in man
power.
Wilson saiu chat among factors
influencing the decision, in addi
tion to what he called increased
opportunities for peace, were that
Japan had started to build up its
own defense forces and that the
! situation in Korea had become
mbre stable
Asked whether the cutback
would affect American commit-
iments in Europe, where the Unit
ed States has the equivalent of six
Army divisions, Wilson replied:
•‘Not at all.”
The secretary stressed that the
reductions were arrived at with
out any connection with the new,
reserve training program advanc-i
ed by the Pentagon last Friday.
Most Beloved Carol
Is "Silent Night'
.//
The most beloved caioi of the
many that are sung in all parts of
the world is “Silent Night" that
simple and tender German song.
Its origin was unknown for
many years. Recent research.
however, disclosed that it was
written by Joseph Mohr, an as- j
sistant priest in Obemdorf in
South Germany. The melody
was composed by a schoolmaster,
Franz Gruber.
_ i
The poet and the composer
were part of the choir that sang
the carol for the first time on
Christmas Eve in the Obemdorf
church in 1818.
The night it was sung the
small church’s organ was out of
order and the choir sang to the
accompaniment of a guitar.
Since then the carol has been
sung to the tune of almost every
musical instrument in the world
and in the languages of nearly
all men.
