$3 Million
S. C. Deficit
Predicted
Greenville, Oct. 20 — Rep.
Charlie V. Verner, chairman of
the House Ways and Means Com.
mittee, said the state will face a
$3,000,000 deficit if the present
revenue trend .continues.
He saw the possibility of a
smaller budget for 1955-56 on the 1
basis of “revenue that is falling
off.” Apparently, some $3,000,-
000 now in the 'reserve fund
would partly cover any deficit in
the present budget of approxi
mately $162,000,000.
Mr. Verner has been with the
Budget and Control Board dur
ing the past three weeks inspect
ing state institutions.

As Told to United Press
Myrtle Beach, Oct. 16—I was
up all night Thursday.
A message came through about
2:30 a. m., that the hurricane had
changed its course and was head
ing for us. I took one officer
with me and sent two others to
the other end of the beach. We
held our sirens wide open as we
drove down the beach and lights
started popping on in the houses.
After we made two or. three
runs up and down the water
front, we went to houses where
there were no lights and woke
the people up and asked them to
come down to the shelters we
had set up in city hall, the two
school houses and several other
places. '
We weren’t expecting anything
like the damage done on the
watrefront The amount of dam
age I don’t know. All three fish
ing piers are gone completely.'
From what I hear from other'
places, lots of them are a darn
sight worse off than this.
The lights went off about 9:15
a. m., and the wind was highest
between 10 and 11 o’clock. We
! had about 1,500 people in the
| shelters. I only know of two in-
