New 'Point System'
Aimed At Taking Unfit
Driver' Off State Roads
Beginning immediately, the State
Highway Department will set up a
“poirit system" for traffic law vio- t
lators whereby every traffic vio- t
lation committed and reported will
count toward suspension of the of
ten d i n g driver’s license, Chief
Highway Commissioner Claude Ft
McMillan announced today.
This action is designed as an ad
ditional step toward preventing
traffic accidents Mr. McMillan,
said. He explained that each vio-i
lation will be graded as to .its .se
riousness and the applicable num-
(t^r of points recorded on the driv
ers record. Points will also be as-
igned for warnings issued.
When the total of a driver’s vio
lation points reaches a minimum of
ten he will be notified to meet with
a patrol officer for a hearing. The
purpose of the interviews will be!
to determine what action can be
taken to improve the driver or if he,
is definitely unfit mentally or phy-/
sically to safely operate a motor^
vehicle.
If it appears from the circum
stances that a driver should be al
lowed another chance, he will be
permitted to retain his operating
privileges until there is a subse
quent violation with resulting ad
ditions to his violation point rec
ord. The additional points will re
sult in automatic suspension of his
license. If a person, at the time
of the interview, is found unfit to
drive his license will be suspended
immediately.
