W. P. Dickson, of the Hopewell
community, was disking a seven-
acre field of kudzu last week in
preparation for the planting of corn
next spring. The field has been;
in kudzu for the past six or seven
j ears and there is a tremendous |
amount of residue of leaves and
vines on the land. Mr. Dickson said
that he plans to give this a second
•^ disking during the winter or early
tipring in order to get the organic !
g matter into the soil to hasten de-
«•; composition.
Farmer experience and experi-
;j ment station results show that corn
g yields are greatly increased by fol-
\\ lowing a corn-kudzu rotation. At
:;j the Alabama Experiment station
jj corn yields were increased from j.j
:;j 14.7 to 34.0 bushels per acre in four
\\ crops of corn in such a rotation. j*
Mr. Dickson, who is a district
:j supervior, said, “There is a large j.j
§ acreage in Laurens county thaf
needs kudzu for protection and soil j.j
building. In addition to a corn ro- g
tation, a field of kudzu can always j.j
be used in late summer and early g
fall when other pastures are low.” i It
