Fall and Winter
Grazing Needed,
Says County Agent
The short hay crop due to dry
weather makes fall and winter graz
ing more important, according to
C. B. Cannon, county agent. Where
sufficient moisture, seeding of fes
cue at the rate, of 25 to 30 pounds
and not over two pounds of Ladino
Clover per acre. Fertilize with 800
to 1.000 pounds of a 3-12-12 per acre.
Apply lime where needed and seed
on well prepared seed bed. When
ever any clover is seeded, always
use inoculation. j-
For temporary grazing, recommend
mixtures of three bushels of oats,
two bushels of barley, one bushel of
wheat, 30 pounds of rye grass and
^0 pounds of Crimson Clover. An
other gooci mixture is 40-50 pounds
rye grass and 20 pounds of Crimson
Clover. Fertilize with 400 to 600
pounds of a 3-112-12 fertilizer per
acre and §eed at once.pn well pre
pared seed bed. '
Recommend applying as top-dress
ing as soon as seed come up to a
stand with at least 100 pounds or
more of nitrogen to rush growth be
fore cold weather.
Plants will not grow when tem
perature is below 40 degrees. Cold
weather and over-grazing will not
produce satisfactory returns. ,
Permanent fescue and ladino pas
tures that have not received this
summer 400 to 600 pounds of a 3-12-j
12 fertilizer should receive treat-j
ment at once. Also liberal applica-j
tion of nitrogen is to be apphed ati
once.

Acquitted On
Murder Charge
Laurens, October 1—Waldo Mar
tin, fifty-two - year - old wood
pulp supervisor, was acquitted here
late Friday on an indictment charg-
ihg him with the rifle killing of
Sims O. Douglas, Negro woodpulp
worker of Pomaria, Newberry
county.
The slaying took place March 6
at a roadside grocery near a rail
road woodpulp loading platform at
Maddens, this county.
Attorneys for Martin argued self
defense after Martin testified that
Douglas had cursed him and was
advancing on him in the store with
something in his hand that he
thought might have been a weaopn.
State witnesses testified that
Douglas had been eating a can of 1
pork and beans, using the top for
a spoon.
State and defense witnesses had
testified to an argument which pre
ceded the shooting in which Mar
tin had questioned Douglas about
his failure to be at work that day.
Trial of the case took the better
part of two days.
Martin was represented by At
torneys O. L. Long and Thomas E.
Babb. Solicitor W. T. Jones and
former Solicitor Hugh Beasley of
Greenwood, represented the state.
