District Legion
Meet Held Here At
Bell Street School
On Sunday afternoon District No.
15, American Legion, held a district
meeting at Bell Street school with
about seventy-five Legionaires and
women of the Auxiliary present.
Benjamin L. Thompson, district
Commander of District No. 15, was
present to outline the program for
the district {or the year 1953-54.
A group discussion was held on
how to , improve the activities of
the district level as well as how to
incerase the membership. The
Department Commander, Martin K.
Rosenfield, was present and ad
dressed the group.
Also the Department Adjutant,
J. J. Bullock, National Executive
Committeeman, J. Roy Stone, of
Greenville, were present. Carlton
F. Winn, who has rendered assist
ance to the Pitts-Gary post since it
was organized, was present and
spoke briefly.
After the meeting a dutch lunch
eon was served.

The guest speaker for the morning
worship hour was Rev. L. W. Shealy
of Laurens, a former pastor of Ep-
W'orth church.
The afternoon song service was
informal with the history of the
church being given by Mrs. Lavinia
Cooley.
Among the out-of-town visitors
attending all or a part of the Home
coming services were Mr. and Mrs.
P. L. Attaway of Whitmire, Mr. and
Mrs. Gettus Attaway and children
of Greenville; Mr. and Mrs. Tom
Boland, Mr. and Mrs. Barney Prater
of Batesburg; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Jauknight, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wise,
Mr. and Mrs. Dunneway Turner,
Miss Betty Turner of (Newberry, Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Brown and son, Tom
my, and Mrs. Painter, Mrs. W. A.
Moorhead, Clinton; Mrs. Johnny
Davis of Cross Hill.

Attends The Citodel
On Scholarship
JACK BROWN
A Thornwell orphanage student is
attending The Citadel this year as a
J winner of the Robert Wyche Goggans
; Memorial scholarship.
Jack Brown, member of’Hhe 1953
graduating class at the orphanage,
was awarded the scholarship on the
basis of scholarship, character, per
sonality and leadership.
He was described by the school as
having done good Work, particularly
in the electrical shop. He has been
an outstanding .athlete in both foot
ball and basketball.
Robert Wyche Goggans was killed
in an automobile accident in 1952.
He was graduated from The (Citadel
in 1946 with a BjS. degree in civil
engineering. While at The Citadel,
he was captain of the basketball
team, cadet captain and is listed in
Whos Who in American Colleges and
Universities. At the time of his
' death Mr. Goggans was field eng
ineer with Portland Cement Asso
ciation in Charlotte, N. C.
He was the son of Mrs. James F.
Goggans of Columbia.
Owner of Stolen
Bicyde Sought
Sheriff W. A. Lowery said yes
terday he would like to deliver
to the owner a boy’s bicycle which
has been in his office for several
weeks. The bicycle, he said, was
apparently stolen by someone trav
eling between Clinton and Laurens.

County Tax Books.
For '53 Now Opeii
County Treasurer Sam M. Lea-
man announces the opening of the
county tax books on October 1 for
the collection of 1953 county and
school district taxes. Tax notices
are in process of being mailed out,
he said.
The total county tax levy, includ
ing county-wide, special school,!
school bonds and county board of
education for Laurens school dis
trict No. 55, is 44 mills; for Clinton- 1
Joanna district No. 56 it is 49 mills. 1
