And in August I rode with McCord of Georgetown to see his demonstra tion plantings of this great new grass. One field of his has been cut twice for hay and cattle were half knee deep in it then. But that field has been irrigated! With plenty of fertility and adequate water, that grass will do wonders. Certified seed patches were started in every county last spring. That; old hated grass, hated in the culti-! vated field, is now just about tops 1 for pasturage. And his Coastal Ber-J muda plantings were just fine, he says. They even cut good hay there, while nothing resembling hay ma- j terialized from other things. I Last year Oconee apple growers 1 got together and put out a high; quality pack of apples through a central packing shed. This year I they are adding a cider mill, accord-1 ing to County Agent Morgan. Snap beans is another crop this group is planning on for the coming year. Those little mountain coves are a! natural for such summer truck. Now i with a marketing facility there to handle them, they are launching new crops suited to the area. I Dream A Bit I like to go to airports, see the great birds of the sky come in, taxi to a stop, disgorge their human car- Women of Hie Church To Hold Meet go, take on more, and then roar away into the outer spaces again. Yes, to me, that’s always thrilling. But best yet is to be on that great bird. Riding the winds and the clouds! Rubbing out distances! I ate breakfast in Greenville and early supper in Spokane, Washington. I ate dinner in Atlanta, fooled around there until 3 p. m., and then ate a late supper in Los Angeles. All of this is simply incredible to me, a simple backwoodsman from the Stone Hills of the Dutch Fork. Often as a kid I dreamed of such things. But they were in the world of fancy, that beautiful world of make-believe. And there I was do ing it. Yes, in the course of a very few hours from the burning flat lands of the Midwest to the snow capped peaks of the northern Rock ies! Yes, that^was old country me on a hot summer day. And we en countered a thunderstorm, ahead, right over those mountains. Did we try to go around it? No. We just went up to about the 4-mile eleva tion and went over it, as dark tur moil and jagged lightning boiRd together in the seething caldron be low.
