Orphanage Alumni
Unveil Painting
To Thomas C. Icott
A group of Thomwell orphanage
Alumni held their annual meeting
Sunday afternoon on the campus
and later in the afternoon enjoyed
a picnic supper at Horseshoe Falls
on Enoree river.
The meeting was presided over
by the president, Rev. John Rhodes
of Darlington. Brief greetings were
brought by Dr. M. A. Macdonald,
president of the orphanage.
The Aluipni association last year
selected as its project for 1953 the
furnishing of one of the rooms in
the new high school building in
honor of the late Thomas C. Scott,
identified with the orphanage for
43 years, and the providing of a
painting to be placed in the library
to be known as the Thomas C. Scott
Mtemorial Room. During th£ after
noon the handsome painting was
unveiled, a perfect likeness of Mr.
Scott, who is remembered here by
many of the older residents of the
community. Funds of $1200 were
contributed during the year tp pay
for the furniture and painting to
complete the memorial.
„ Mrs. Cassie Lee Oliver Talbot
paid a tribute to the life of M*\
Scott and spoke of his devotion for
the orphanage and its children
through the years, and his love for
God.
The date of Mr. Scott’s birth is
not known.. He was born in Lon-

don, ». painter by trade, and as a
young man came to this country.
He landed in Clinton and associat
ed himself with Dr. William Plumer
Jacobs in the early days of the or
phanage in 1875. He assisted the
founder in the construction and su
pervision of the buildings that
sprang up at intervals during the
pioneer years of the institution. In
i the early days the orphnage had
almost no funds or necessities to
! care for the small family of chil
dren. Mr. Scott rendered invalu-
! able help to Dr. Jacobs as he drove
a wagon through this section over
rough roads soliciting and collect-
! :ng farm products, food, other ar
ticles and small gifts of cash he
found interested friends ready to
contribute wherever he went. He
| worked all his life for a very small
remuneration and spent most of it
; for the children, the purehasing ef
books and other items he gave to
the homes on the campus. His life
was one of unselfish service and de
votion to the children of the home.
The Alumni, many of whom knew
him, had expressed a desire to fur
nish one of the rooms of the new
school building and unveil therein
a painting of Mr. Scott that his
memory may live through the
years as one of the pioneer friends
and helpers of brphan -children.
Mr. Scott passed away here on
February 10, 1918, just five months
after the death of Dr. Jacobs which
occurred in September, 1917. He
was buried in the orphanage ceme
tery plot at the First Presbyterian
church.
The Alumni association at the
close of its meeting re-elected Mr.
Rhodes as president for the coming
year, Charles E. Layton of Way-
cross, Ga., vice-president, Miss Inez
Tucker of this city, secretary, Mrs.
Dennis Sowers, also of this city,
treasurer.
