KRIDAY AND SATURDAY, MAY 22-23
Wanderer of the LEOPARD MAN
The entire graduating class of
Clinton high school made a tour of
the local plant operations Thurs
day, May 14. Walking through the
various departments the students
got an idea of the organization
within an industrial plant and the
many jobs required to produce a
quality cloth for eventual sale to
the customer. Calvin A. Cooper,
persoirnf! director, welcomed the
60 seniors and told them many in
teresting facts about the Clinton
Cotton Mills.
The seniors were told that the
1,041 employees of Clinton Cotton
Mills were paid last year, two and
three-quatter million dollars for
their services. More than one mil
lion yards of cloth are produced
weekly.
*
Divided into groups of 10 and
starting at two minute intervals,
they toured the plant in approxi

employees, familiar with * every
phase of the local operations, acted
as guides and (explained the va
rious operations to the students:
John Sparks, overseer carding;
Roy Holtzclaw, overseer spinning;
A. C. Young, standards manager;
Van Oxner, supervisor carding;
John Vassey, standards depart
ment; Calvin Cooper, personnel di
rector.
Beginning in the opening room,
the students saw the raw cotton op
ened and separated, a process for
removing the dirt and foreign ma
terials. From there, they pro
gressed through department after
department — carding, spinning,
spooling, slashing, weaving and
cloth room.
The ty-in machine confused and |
fascinated many, tying of the pat
tern to the warp and the speed at
which the knots were tied.

S OME people are of the opin
ion that we in the insurance
business provide only indi
vidual protection for-fhe policy
holder. Some of us fail to realize
the great contribution made by
insurance companies toward the
protection of the nation.
During World War II insur
ance companirs'ftivested approx
imately $22 billion in U. S. Gov
ernment securities, primarily
war bonds.
Not only did we contribute to -
America’-s war effort, but an od-
d.tiona! $l l 4 billion were invest
ed in the preservation of Democ
racy through financial assist
ance to cur allies. Truly, every
man who shoplders a gun, every
plane that flies, every ship that
sails; yes, every military force
that strikes a’-death blow against
the enemies cf Democracy, is
supported bv our industry.
Let there be no mistake about
it, our military contribution to
Democracy has equaled that of
any other business.
The above is not written in a
.»pr boastfulness, but rather
- : piration to our employ
es, l..- as information to the
public generally.
