V * 4 4 l I t Thursday, May 14, 1953 THE CLINTON CHRONICLE Paare Threa BARSON DISCUSSES RESEARCH AND IMPORTANCE OF THE INDIVIDUAL By ROGER W. BABSON Babson Park, Mass., May 14.—In quiries Constantly come to me ask ing for some way to prevent more World Wars. Instead of answering these letters personally, may I give my answer in this week’s column? Military Strength Ninety-five per cent of the poli ticians of every nation appear to believe that the only means of keeping their country out of war is to have a bigger army, a more pow erful navy, a greater air force and the most atomic bombs. Of course, this is not the an swer. It is like trying to «ure an alcoholic by giving him more drinks. In fact, 2,000 years ago Jesus stated: “For all ■ W? f fa J World Peace. This will not be brought about alone by the priests and preachers, however earnest and necessary they are. The founda tion for the Kingdom of God is be ing built by the teachers, scientists and inventors. These include mathematicians, physicists, cftem- [ i s t s, metallurgists, psychologists, and all others working for human-, ity in the laboratories of every na-j ton. These men and women are | making discoveries which may as sure the people of all . nations health, intelligence, prosperity and happiness. These are the people whom Jesus would praise were He here today. Whom Haw We To Thank? Strange to say, we have the big corporations—many of which the U. S. Department of Justice is persecuting—to thank for the re- they that take the! cent great progress. Last year, srword shall perish with the s w o r d.” _ _ History shows this Reger W. BabMa to have ^eix 100 per cent correct. Any reader who doubts this need only read the lives of the greatest military leaders, such as Alexander the Great, Cy rus, Caesar, Genghis Khan, Mo hammed, Ivan the Terrible, (Jrom- well, Napoleon, Bismarck and Hit ler. over $3,500,000,00 was spent in the United States alone on research to make the world healthier, more in- tellgent and happier. Two-thirds of this amount was spent by cor porations whose stocks are traded in so-called ‘‘Wicked Wall Street.” The remaining third consisted mostly of Government appropria tions for which we may praise or belittle Franklin D. Roosevelt ■ and his kind-hearted wife. But the What Jesus Taught 2.00 Years Ago 1 cor p orat u ion s. themselves did not Thereupon the preachers tell us th 0 t n d n !^° ve " eS T lt 1 was Ut narificm an* Hicarmamont ara <>f the 250,000 individuals in their that pacifism and disarmament are the answer failing to talk about the Old Testament which was the only Bible that Jesus knew or used. When Jesus preached about “dis armament,” He assumed that jus tice, mercy and intelligence would be substituted therefor. The fact is that if we read the books of the Bible in the order in which they were written we see that Jesus was talking about the Kingdom of God based on righteousness and ness to all people employ. The electrical machinery and ! aircraft industries each spent over $400,000,000 on research. The chem- 1 ical industry (which gave us the wonderful drugs that are blessing humanity today) and the motor ve hicle industry each spent $200,000,- 000 on research. In addition, there are many private funds, such as the Rockefeller Foundation and the fair-j new Ford Foundation. Yale uni versity has just set up a fund of Today, I see a possibility HEAR Charles C. Moore Candidate For , Congress Tonight At 8:30 P. M. Over WFBC WBCU WSPA WORD 0 f. $6,000,000 for research n connection — with the mental cases which are !.fl 00d i n6 our hosp.tals and which j many believe are as unnecessary as smallpox and cholera plagues. ; Opportunities For Small Businesses Above I mention only big cor- ' porations, but I find that some of J our most important discoveries have been by small businesses em ploying only a few men. Further more, I find that many of them humble workers just stumbled onto their discoveries while hunting forj something else. Hence, in the last; analysis, all our blessings have come from humble individuals, most of whom we have never j heard of. Therefore, I use every i ing individual, whatever his race I opportunity to appeal for the pray- 1 or color, whether rich or poor. Far j too much attentiort is given by I “educators” to “Ph. D ’s” and other j degrees. In doing so, I believe they | are retarding rather than advanc- , ing research. Great changes are ahead. What- ; ever may happen during the next i few years, I am a great optimist | as to the future of our grandchil dren. The atomic bomb is not go- j ing to destroy the world; it Will 'free the world. It has already ! started a new line of thinking. We will enter a period when our news papers will no longer feature “cold wars” or “hot wars,” but will again feature new discoveries: Men like Caxton who pioneered the printing press (1475) which opened the : minds of men, Eli Whitney who in- j vented the * cotton gig (1793) which developed a great export trade, James Watt (1769) . and Isaac Mer- iritt Singer (1851) who spurred the industrial development of the Unit ed States, Thomas Edison, Henry ! Ford and John D. Rockefeller who laid the basis for America’s pres- perity. We also should remember Pasteur to whom we all owe much of our health and happiness. Will W* Have World War III? World War I did not accomplish anything except lead to World War II. Even this second World War, every nation lost. Yet we are now discussing World War III. Only re search and Religion can prevent World War III. If Communism had not denied God and Truth, it might now win; but having chosen the sword, it will surely die the sword. Our politicians foolishly talk about_‘<3un$ versus Butter.” In stead, we should talk about “Guns versus New Ideas.” For either Of these to be useful, we are depend ent upon humble individuals. Such people may be found in any com munity. We should encourage them, never laugh at them or ask them if they have a college degree!
