Thomwell Students To Give Recital The grammar grade chorus and will -give their spring recital Friday piano students of Thomwell schools evening, May 8, in the high school auditorium at 8 o’clock. Mrs. Joe Hinds is music teacher. The public is invited to attend the musical event. -1 *■ Engagement Announced Mrs. Rachel Moseley announces the engagerfient of her daughter, Helen Campbell, to Pvt. Leon A. Abercrombie of this city and Kess ler Field, Miss., son of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Abercrombie. The wedding will be an event of May and plans will be announced later. Simpson-Simmons Announcement Mr. and Mrs. Mason Simpson an nounce the marriage of their daughter, Martha Ann, to Edward Eugene Simmons on March 15 at Ninety-Six. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Howard Scarboro, pastor of the Baptist church. They were attended by Mr. and Mrs. James Braswel of this city. The young couple are mak ing their home with the groom’s mother, Mrs. Henry Simmons, on North Broad street. Circle Organized Duncan Creek Church Women of the Duncan Creek Presbyterian church have recently organized a circle with Mrs. W. B. Blakely as chairman. Mrs. James The May meeting will be held S. Gray is Bible, teacher Tuesday afternoon, May 12, at 3:00 o’clock with Mrs. Edgar C. Taylor, Sr: Bailey. Assisting as hostesses were Mrs. W. L. Marshall, Jr., Mrs. Da vid S. Cook, Mrs. James S. Gray, Mrs. Walter A Johnson, Mrs W. Y. Thompson and Mrs. D. O. Rhame. The members and their guests en joyed a delightfully informal so cial hour. Later refreshments were served buffet in the dining room. White roses with sprays of green ery made an unusual and lovely centerpiece for “the table. Through out the receiving rooms peonies and roses were arranged with other garden flowers for decoration. Lutheran Society Elects Officers The Woman’s Missionary Society of St. John’s Lutheran church met Monday evening with Mrs. Fred Burnett. Mrs. T. M. Sease presented the program on “European Women Serving.” During a business session the fol lowing officers were elected to serve for the coming year: President—Mrs. S. P. Bowers. Vice-President—Mrs. O. C. •Woodruff. Treasurer—Mrs. W. T. banning. Secretary—Mrs. R. W. Boland. A social hour was enjoyed later with the hostess serving cake, ice cream and punch. Shady Grove Club Met Wednesday The Shady Grove Home Demon-' stration club met Wednesday after-1 noon in the club house. Mrs. J.! C. Nabors conducted the devotion-! als after which there was a short business session. The club decided to conduct the drive for cancer Methodist Circles Meet Monday The circles of Broad Street Meth odist church meet Monday after noon, May 11, at 3:30 o’cldck. Barden Circle—Mrs. Tom Fick- lin, chairman; Mrs. J. B. Puryear hostess, with Mrs. Harry Bauknight as assistant. Mayme Johnson Circle — Mrs. Sam McCrary, chairman, at the church. "T Ellie Hatton Circle—Mrs. Billy Pitts, chairman; Mrs. Lewis Pitts, hostess. The Sara Glenn circle will meet at 8 o’clock Monday night at the home of Mrs. Bill Abrams, with Miss Sara Stone and Mrs. Leslie Sharpe as hostesses. Louise Best Circle will meet at the Training school Wednesday night at 8 o’clock, May 13. Mrs. Irene Pitts, chairman. Brdige Luncheon Afternoon Forty Mrs. W. P. Jacobs, Mrs. W. P. Jacobs, III, and Mrs. Hugh Jacobs entertained at bridge on Wednes day. Guests were invited for a number of morning games with a luncheon served at noon. High and second score awards went to Mrs. Tom Ad dison and Mrs. George Huguley, with consolation being won by Mrs Caldwell Henderson. Other ffienas were invited for an afternoon party with prizes going to Mrs. Horace Payne and Mrs. Ru fus Sadler. A number of tea guests were invited to call after cards. A salad course, Russian tea and des sert were served. Assisting the hostesses in the courtesies of entertaining were Mrs. N. Reese Young, Mrs. C. E. Gallo way, Mrs. Arnold Cannon, Mrs. Reese H. Young, Mrs. Edward Fer guson, Mrs. Michael Turner, Mrs. E. H. Hall, Mrs. Harry Nettles, Mrs. Rufus Sadler, Mrs. Robert Black, and Mrs. Pringle Copeland, Jr. For the occasion the home was lovely with flowers of the season. A. is sponsoring their annual pre school clinic on May 12 and 13 at 1:30 at the Health Center on Wood- row street. Parents who have children en tering school for the first time and whose sixth birthdays are before November 1, are asked to bring them to the center on those dates for examination and a vaccination for smallpox. HAMILTON’S Blue Nile Diamonds Ella Riddell Circle Met Wednesday The Ella Riddell circle of Thorn- well Memorial church met yester day at the Florida home with Mrs. Hattie Blankenship as hostess. Mrs. J. K. Brown, chairman, called the meeting to order and opened with prayer. The roll call was answer ed nvith each member reciting a Bible verse. - - Miss Lucy Clawson had charge of the program on the birthday, ob jective, “Furlough Homes,” assisted by Mrs. M. R. Huff and Mrs. F. M Stutts. The Bible study was led by Mrs. A. S. Maxwell, after which the meeting was closed with sen tence prayers. Episcopal Auxiliary Has May Meeting The May meeting of the Wom an’s Auxiliary of All Saints Episco pal Mission was held at the Mission Monday evening. The president, Mrs Newton Jones, presided over a business ses sion at which time altar furnish ings were discussed Plans were | made to send canned goods on; Mother’s Day to the Church Home for Ladies in Charleston Mrs. J. B. Hart led the program, giving a discussion from the study book, “The Holy Scripture.” Bridge Clubs Have Meetings A dessert bridge was given Thursday afternoon by -Mrs. D B. Smith for her club and several other guests. Three tables were laid for re freshments and a sweet course was served with iced drinks before the; games Mrs W. M. McMillan made top score for vsitors and Mrt. Perry Moore for club members. . Roses in a variety of shades with! other flowers of the season madei a lovely setting for cards. Entertaining members t of her club and additional friends, Mrs. Eugene Johnson was hostess for five tables of bridge Thursday af ternoon. Sweetpeas/i iris and roses were artistically arranged in the card rooms for decoration. . - Guest prize went to Mrs. R. C. Adair and club award to Mrs. Fran cis Blalock. Mrs. Henry Lukstat won bingo prize. When cards were laid aside the hostess was assisted by Miss Mary Johnson in serving a salad plate, punch and cookies. Open Meeting .Of Century Club Hie annual open meeting of the Century club was held Tuesday af ternoon at the home of Mrs. C. M. Tunds in the community. Several members gave a discussion on fur nishing and decorating the living room. Miss Dean gave a demon stration on Food After Forty. At the close of the program a so cial hour was enjoyed. Joint Hostesses Fete Bride-Elect Among social courtesies extended Miss Nancy Griffin since the an nouncement of her engagement was the party given Friday afternoon by Mrs. Eugene Johnson and Mrs. W. D. Crocker at the home of the former. Three tables of bridge were in play during the afternoon and later two tables were appointed for guests invited to call after cards. Miss Griffin made top score hon ors and bingo prizes went to Mrs. W. R. Anderson and Miss Sara Robinson. The hostess’ gift to the honoree was silver. ~ f « Following the games a salad plate was served with punch and later sweets were passed. Mrs. Ir ving Lown assisted in serving. For the occasion the house was lovely with pastel floral arrange ments featuring pink roses, sweet- peas and iris. Leake who celebrates his 1 70th birthday Thursday, April 30,' which day also marked his retire ment as a rural letter carrier, was honored at 6 o'clock on Sunday evening with a drop-in. Throughout the home many beautiful ftofal arrangements were displayed. Supper was served buf fet in the dining room from a table prettily centered with a bouquet of sweet peas and roses.
