To Kiwanis Club

President J. C. Thomas of the
Kiwanis club has announced that
lieutenant governor Harold Wheel
er of Gaffney, will meet with the
club on April 23 for an official
visit.
The club at its last meeting had
as-its guest Robert P. Hamer, presi
dent of Bank of Clinton, county
committeeman, who spoke on the
importance of buying U. S. Gov
ernment bonds in cooperation with
the drive now on in April by the
Treasury Department. In urging
the public to buy the defense
bonds, he spoke of the danger of
beoming indifferent to the cam
paign since we are not engaged in
an all-out war.

MARTHA DUCKETT DENDY
Martha Duckett Dendy, 86, a
well known and highly regarded
colored Clinton citizen for many
years, passed away Thursday, April
* at her home en North Adair
street.
The funeral services/ attended by
a large concourse of friends and
relatives, were held Sunday after
noon from Friendship A. M. E.
church by tha pastor, Rev. K. L.
Moore. Burial* followed at the
North Bell Street cemetery.
Martha, as she was known by
many friends, white and* colored,
was bom August 19, 1867, in this
county and had lived the greater
part of her life in this community.
For years she faithfully worked
at Presbyterian college and later
hor^e for the college and many res-
cperated a private laundry at her
idents of the city. Besides her
work as a domestic helper, and em
ployment at the college, she operat
ed a restaurant and grocery store.
She was a-member of the Baptist
faith until her marriage to the late
J. E. Y. Dendy at which time she
united with the Methodist church
and remained a faithful member
until her passing. Her husband
was a first-fate carpenter of the
community until his passing. As a
