Upward Move
Richmond, Va., April 4.—Business
lending at Fifth District banks con
tinued to advance last week, the Fed
eral Reserve Bank of Richmond re
ported.
Registering their fifth ^consecutive
weekly gain, commercTal^ industrial,
and agricultural loans of 50 repre
sentative banks increased $3,004,000
in the week ended March 25. The
rise brought the total outstanding to
$644,651,000, exceeding for the first
time the record level of year-end
1952, the Reserve bank said.
Principal business borrowers last
week -were -wholesale and retail mer
chants, construction firms and metal
and metal products manufacturers, a
detailed 16-bank report showed.
Commo4ity dealers and sales finance
companies made offsetting repay
ments, the bank said.
The 50 banks whose figures are
reported weekly to the Reserve bank
are located in representative cities of
the Fifth Federal Reserve District,
which includes Maryland, Virginia,
West Virginia, North Carolina, South
Carolina, and the District of Colum
bia. ‘
