Enjoys Birthday
The children of the parents’ fam-

j birthday. Kent was 2 years old j
| and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ru-;
I dolph Prater. The little folk en-1
! joyed out of door games on the |
; lawn.
The dining table was overlaid
; with a white embossed cloth and
; centered with the decorated cake
j in white and red with red can-,
dies. The centerpiece was encir-1
ded with early spring flowers and
ivy.
Mrs. Prater cut the cake and
served it with chocolate and va-
arrow and fancy Valentines, all in
keeping with the red and white
color note.
The invocation was given by
Rev. Perry W. Turner and the wel
come by Mike Cooley. Miss Patty
Chisholm of Hopewell, gave the
response. William P. Byars served
as master of ceremonies. Preced
ing the serving of the three-course
dinner, the group, by secret ballot,
elected Brenda O’Dell and Mike
Cooley as King and Queen of Val-
, entine. They were crowned by
Mr. Byars with appropriate re
marks. The crowns were fancy red
hearts outlined in shining sequins
on a white base.
Throughout the evening a pro
gram consisting of fellowship sing
ing, banquet games and stunts
were enjoyed. Special musical se
lections were rendered by Brenda
O’Dell, Larry Garner and Jimmy
Riser, with Miss Patsy Whitmire as
piano accompanist. Rev. Turner
gave a humorous stunt, “Poor Lit
tle Match Girl.” Remarks were
made by Rev. James Kinard of
Hopewell, John I. Moore, superin
tendent of youth at Epworth, and
Mrs. Lavinia Cooley, superintend
ent of the Intermediate department.
At the close of the evening the
group formed their Friendship cir
cle and Rev. Turner led the clos
ing prayer, leaving a great chal
lenge to the young people.
The decorating committee was
headed by Miss Kittie Mae Mose
ley. Those preparing the meal were
Mesdames J. M. Ross, J. F. Low-
man, L. J. Brock, and C. R. O’Dell.
The waitresses were Mesdames Ru
dy Prater, Curtis Salters, Preston
White, Shuford Lewis, Herbert
Lewis, and W. W. Niver, Jj*.
To Wed On TV Program
Friends of Miss Betty Jo Hughes
of Greenville, and Bill Poag, son of
Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Poag of Joanna,
will be interested to know they
plan to be married on the television
program, “Bride and Groom.” The
vows will be spoken on March 5 at
12:00 noon in New York City.
Midget Girls Go To Tournament
The Midget girls’ basketball team
left today for Myrtle Beach to par
ticipate in the state tournament.
The girls won 2 games from Winns-
boro last week which entitled them
to go to Myrtle Beach to compete
against Orangeburg for a try at the
championship in the state Midget

W. S. C. S. Holds Meeting
The Woman’s Society* of Chris
tian Service held its February
meeting last Tuesday evening at
the church. The business hour
preceded the program and was pre
sided over by the president. Rou
tine business was disposed of and
a general discussion on sending
the Intermediates to summer camp
was held. It w’as voted for the so
ciety to sponsor and pay the ex
penses of th*ee. Due to the large
demand for Roxboro brooms, the
group decided to order 5 dozen
which will be for sale in the near
future. The business hour was
closed with prayer by Mrs. John
M. Ross.

Maltese Cross Sub-District Meets
Thirteen members of the MYF of
Joanna attended the Maltese Cross
Sub-District meeting at the First
church in Laurens Monday night.

tic Mission,” was shown.
The social hour was held in the
recreation hall with the evening’s
climax being two musical numbers'

ed cookies were served by the host

is a patient at the local hospital.
Maxie Lollis, nephew of J. C.
Lollis, was admitted to the local
hospital for treatment on Feb. 13.
William Dominick is a patient at
Joanna hospital.

is a patient at the local hospital.

Sweetheart Banquet Enjoyed
One of the loveliest affairs of the
Valentine season was the semi-for-
mal Sweetheart banquet of the In
termediate department of Epworth
church. Places were laid for 68
members and invited guests in the
spacious assembly room of Joanna
club and marked with small heart
place cards. The programs were
red hearts encircled in white frills.
Centering the banquet table was a
Valentine creation in white with
red fulle frilling, this' being the
background for the miniature
sweethearts in modem dress. Oth
er decorations were placed at van
tage points in the room, including
large red hearts with white or
