ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S STORY
TOLD IN HIS OWN WORDS
Pub. Co., Stationery Dept.
New York.—This is the story of
Abraham Lincoln’s early life, told in
his own words.
The Great Emancipator, did not
write it in a single narrative, but
Stefan Lorant, author of the book,
“Lincoln: a Picture Story of His
Life,” Harper, and other volumes on
| American history, has performed
that chore as a sidelight on the ob
servance of the 144th anniversary of
Farm Bureau Federation as the del- i Lincoln’s birth on Feb. 12.

The split wit^i former officials has
stemmed largely from the price sup
port issue which the federation lead
ers pressed in their talk with Eisen
hower today.
Farm bureau leaders hold that the
government market supports should
be on a flexible basis ranging Jrom
75 per cent of parity to DO per^cedirlT^HIs^nJicality. It was on Nolin’s
and should be related to the level of
production. Parity is the price de

letters and -writings,” Lorant ex
plains, “a narrative of his early life.
All the words are Lincoln’s (except
the three bracketed ones in the lat
ter part of the account). The sen-
tencs were written at different times,
but strung together they read^tl

The following Is Lincoln’s story:
I was born Feb. 12, 1809, near

One day a wagon with a lady and
two girls and a man broke down
near us and while they were fixing
up, they cooked in our kitchen. The
women had books and read us sto
ries. I took a great .fancy to one of
the girls; and when they were gone
I thought of her a great deal, and
one day when I was sitting out in
the sun by the house, I wrote out a
story in my mind. I thought I took
my folkes’ horse and followed the
wagon, and finally I found it, and
persuaded the girl to elope with me;
and that night I put her on my horse,
and we started off across the prairie.
After several hours we came to a
camp; and when we rode up we
found it was the one we had left a
few hours before, and we went in.
The next night we tried again, and
the same thing happenedi—the horse
came back to the same place; and
then we concluded that we ought not
to elope. I stayed until I had per
suaded her father to give her to me.
I always meant to write that story
out and publish it, and I began once,
but I concluded that it was not much
of a story. But I think that was the
beginning of love with me.
When I came of age I did not
know much. Still, somehow, I could
read, write, and cipher to the rule
of thr.ee, but that was all . , . What
I have in the way of education I
have picked up, from time to time,
under pressure of necessity.

Our new home was a wild region
with many bears and other wild ani

an early start as a hunter, which
was never much improved afterward.
A few days before the completion of
my eighth year, in the absence of my

with a rifle-gun, standing inside, shot
through a crack and killed one of
them. I have never since pulled a
trigger on any larger game.
It was pretty pinching times at
