THE CLINTON CHRONICLE
CHRISTMAS DAY CELEBRATIONS
ON DEC. 25 DATE BACK TO 1602
Page Tbraa
Christmas Day as celebrated on
December 25 in Amercia is a re*
ligious heritage traced back 1,602
years to Pope Julius I. For three
centuries after the birth of Jegua
there was no one day fixed 4or the
universal observance of the Month
of Christ.
Accordingly, the Roman Pontiff
ordered ah ' investigation by King
Cyril to determine the day of the
month of Christ’s birth. Pope Julius
1, after great deliberation, estab
lished Decembr 25 as Christmas
beginning in the year 350 A. D.
Foremost sacred symbol of the
American Christmas, the lowly
manger of the Christ Child, reminds
us that on December 25 we are cele
brating a birthday. The year, instead
of being the generally imagined
-1,952nd birthday of -the Saviour, is
most* likely the 1,956th.
Roman records tell us it was
the year 4 B. C. that Ceasar Augus
tus decreed the whole world should
be taxed. Hence it was that year,
rather than in I A. D. when Joseph
and Mary went to Bethlehem and
Christ was born in a stable.
Merry Christmas as the American
foim of greeting is a reflection of
the tidings of great joy handed down
to us through the centuries and
other languages of the Christian
-world. Everywhere* today the same
sentiment is expressed. Good Holi
days in Portugese, Good Christmas
in Italian, Merry Yule in Finnish,
Good Yule in Swedish, and Joyous
Christmas in French.
Thus always a deeply implanted
symbol of man’s freedom and happy
rebirth Christmas naturally grew to
be celebrated in music and song. The
earliest Christmas chants drew on
the Bible. “Behold I bring you good
tidings of great joy ... for unto
you is born this day in the city
of David a Saviour.”
The first carol, as we know this
type of Christmas music today, how
ever, is credited to St:
Assisi, who lived at the beginning
of the Thirteenth Century.
Martin Luther, 300 years after
St. Francis, followed the pattern set
by the Roman Catholic church. The
Protestant reformer wrote his carol
for his children. “Away in a manger
No crib for His bed, The little Lord
Jesus lay down His sweet head.”
The Christmas tree as the center
of our American festivities is cred
ited by legend to this same Martin
Luther. It is definitely traced, how
ever, to Germany in the beginning
of the Seventeenth Century, since
when its thrilling symbol of Christ
mas has lasted as a thing of joy
for children.
The trimmed tree was introduced
info England by the German hus
band of Queen Victoria in a little
over 100 years ago. Shortly before
that, German immigrants had
brought it to America.
A sar-studded German light one
Christmas Eve, seen by Martin
Luther, is the legendary explana
tion for our custom of hanging
• candles and lights on our American
Christmas trees.

New 1953 Ford
Put On Display By
Baldwin Motor Co.
Crowds visited the Baldwin Mo
tor company showrooms Friday
and Saturday id see the 1953 Ford
.designed as the 50th annivrsary car
of the Ford Motor company.
In celebration of the company's
golden anniversary, a medallion
bearing the Ford crest and the
word* “50th Annireraary—1903—
1953,” has been placed in the cen
ter of the steering wheel.
The body structure emphasizes a
“longer” look with a new chrome
molding through the center of the
rear fenderline and new jet-tube
tailings. The massive newgrille
features a center spinner.
The 1953 model has retained the
large one-piece windshield and the
curved, car-wide rear window. At
extra cost, tinted safety glass is
available.
Internally, Ford, as usual, has
both the V-8 and 6-cylinder en
gines, with conventional overdrive
and Fordomatic transmissions.
The V-8’s 110 horsepower is
again claimed to be the highest
in the low-price field. Available in
the 1953 Ford is the Mileage Mak
er Six, with free-turning overhead
valves. Introduced in 1952, this
high compression, low friction en
gine is rated at 101 horsepower.
Ford has also added a thick
sound-deadening glass fiber lining
under the hood to complement the
hull-tight body construction.
As in the 1952 models the clutch
and brake pedals are suspended
from above to eliminate floor holes,
keep the brake cylinder away from
mud and dust and provide greater
floor space for the driver.
The instrument panel has been
redesigned with a satin-chrome
finish about the gauges and chorme
yokes on the control knobs. Seats
are at foam rubber and a seat
track mechanism at 4.1 inches
properly accommodates d r t v e s’
posture.
Additional features are <fce«lr
straps which hold front doors two-
thirds or wide open, jet-wing hood
ornaments, oblong parking lights,
and center-fill fueling with the
gasoline cap behind the licenee
plate.

The percentage of minors admit
ted to the United States Public
Health Hospital, Lexington, Ky.,
which ministers to drug addicts,
increased six hundred per cent
during the past six years.
The percentage of minors who
are alcohol addicts has shown a
proportionate increase during the!
post-war years.
There is a definite relationship j
between alcohol addiction and|
drug addiction. The alcohol addict;
frequently finds that his stomach
will not tolerate alcohol, so he
switches to drugs. He then switch
es back to alcohol. He then finds
that he needs and must use drugs
and alcohol at the same time. Be
cause of this tie-up, it is well to
spend two or three weeks in this
series on teen-agers and addiction.
The boy or girl who drinks beer
or whiskey with the gang so as to
be one of the crowd or for a thrill,
or to keep from being called the
modern equivalent of “m a m a’s ;
boy” or “fraidy cat,” finds it very
easy to accept the first Marijuana
cigarette offered to him.
After a few weeks of using the
Marijuana cigarettes, it is easy to
accept the innocent - appearing
milky powder offered by the friend,
probably the same one who gave
the first Marijuana cigarette.
Marijuana is illegal in the Unit
ed States, yet thousands of new ad
dicts are being made every year
among our youth. A drug addict is
one who has developed a depend -
ehce oh a drug that is so strong
he cannot of his own will, stop.
Fourteen days is enough to create
a drug atdict.
Marijuana affects different in
dividuals in differeht ways. How
ever, its general effects are: dis
torted perception of time, space,
sound; mental degenration; moral!
degeneration; destruction of inhi
bitions; loss of conscience. Phy
sically it may cause weakness of
the limbs and bloated face.
Heroin, so deadly dangerous that 1
even a doctor cannot prescribe it,
is sold around high schools though-
out the country. The best pros
pects for customers are the users of
alcohol and Marijuana. Heroin en
slaves the user, produces extreme
craving for it, so that the user will
do anything to obtain it. Prosti
tution among high school girls to!
obtain money for heroin is now an
often told story. At the same 1
time heroin makes the addict a
killer and a criminal ready for
anything.
Signs of drug addiction in teen
agers, which every parent should
know and be on guard for: lost in
terest in school work; lost interest
in sports or hobbies; sleepiness;
apathy and indftferenoe, unrelia
bility; irritability; secretiveness;
locking self in room or bathroom
for long periods. The youthful ad
dict may want to stop school. He
may have sypodermic needle
marks on arms or legs.
Drug addicts require special hos
pital and medical attention. The
family physician should be con
sulted at once. Most teen-agers
can be rehabilitated and it is pos
sible their minds have not yet been
permanently injured.
