Tokyo, Nov. 8. — Military men out
here hope that, after one look at the
sorry Korean stalemate, President
elect Eisenhower will decide to end
it by increasing the Allied forces and
whipping the Reds.
These same competent military
leaders who obviously cannot be
named, acknowledge that such a
course would be costly, but note that
all the casualties would not have to
be borne by Americans. They hope
for an increase in the United Na
tions forces with soldiers available
close at hand.
The armistice talks at Panmunjom
are as dead as last week’s comics—
and about as interesting.
Reds Dug In
The months of haggling over the
prisoner of war exchange have al
ready allowed the Chinese and North
Korean Communists to dig in sp
deeply and move up so many sup
plies. that the forces Gen. Mark W.
Clark now commands would not be
able to break through their lines
But by increasing that force and
flushing the enemy out into the open
where planes of Gen. O. P. Wey-
land’s Far East Air Force could get
in their best licks, the present stale
mate could be turned into a war of
maneuver.
A war of maneuver is exactly
what the Communits do jiot want.
American and other United Na
tions forces in Korea haven’t staged
a major offensive since secretary of j
defense, visited Korea in 1951.
