To Hold Seminar

fall seminar at the Laurens First
Methodist church . Thursday. Sept

Maid Of Cotton’
Contest Friday
At Hotel Here
Laurens county's 1952 “Maid of
Cotton” will be chosen from among
a number of candidates in a contest
sponsored by the County “Maid of
Cotton” committee here Friday at
Hotel Mary Musgrove.
Mrs. Sarah Dixon DeLoacn of Lau
rens, “Maid of Cotton” chairman, has
invited the public to attend the con
test in which a number of young wo
men are expected to compete for the
county title. The winner will go to
Clemson in October where she will
compete with other county winners
in the state contest.
The program Friday evening will
get underway at 8 p.m. and will also
include music and refreshments. Mrs.
DeLoacU has asked the candidates to
meet with her at the hotel at 2:30 in
the afternoon.
The National Cotton council, which
sponsors the contest, will send the
national winner on a tour of major
cities throughout the world, where
she will model fashionable cotton
apparel.
The “Maid of Cotton” must be at
least five feet, five inches in height,
must be at least 19 and TioLJndre
than 25 years old on December 30,
1952. She must have been a resident
of the state since January 1952 and
must be gracious and enthusiastic,
capable of winning friends for cotton
everywhere.
A number of young women are ex
pected to participate in the contest.
Misses Toccoa Bailey Wise and Cath
erine Eichelberger of this city, are
included in the group to compete for
the title.

The Laurens County 4-H council
received the highest award in the
state for having excelled in county
4-H work and leadership during
1951-52. Laurens, Abbeville, Darling
ton, Chesterfield, and Sumter, coun
ties were selected from 4-H council
reports for the state’s purple award
group. A gavel was presented by Miss
Juanita Neely, state home demon
stration agent, to this county for out
standing accomplishments and first
place honor.
Announcement of the placings was
made at the business session of the
state 4-<H council meeting and train
ing camp held at Camp Bob Cooper
August 25-29. Each of the five county
4-H councils in the purple award
group was presented an achievement
banner.
The 4-H council report was writ
ten by the old and new county coun
cil officers.
New council officers are: president,
Herschel Gibbs, Trinity Ridge; vice-
president, Onita Silver, Clinton; sec
retary, Doris McDonald, Mountville;
treasurer, Billy Ray Traynham, Gray
Court.
