informed about"government activi
ties.
Be that as it may, in spite of ad
ministration “cutting to the bone’’
and congressional efforts to extend
the cutting to the marrow, the fed
eral payroll kept on going up.
It’s 2,596,690 employees at the
end of the last fiscal year compared
with these other totals:
919,776 just before World War
broke out in 1939.
3,749,578 at its wartime peak in
1945.
1,968,400 when war broke out in
Korea, in June, 1950.
Thus the increase since Korean
fighting began is 628,290.
What do all thes peoplce do?
President Truman gave a run
down in his last speech to the Na
tional Civil Service League. Sev.
enty-eight per cent, he said, work
for the Defense Department, Post-
office, and Veteran’s Administra
tion. He went on to say:
“The remaining 22 per cent per
form all other functions of the
government — staffing such vital
agencies as the FBI and the Atom
ic Energy Commission, the Soil
Conservation Service and reclama
tion, the employment service and
public health.”

In addition, two further curbs
have been in effect:
