Notes From The
County Agent’s Office
By C. B. QANNON, County Agent
Cotton Situation
Weevil infestation continues to
climb with poisoned fields showing
an infestation of 18 per cent and
unpoisoned fields showing 70 pier
cent.
Farmers are urged to watch for
red spider, bollworm and aphids.
Red spider damage can usually be
spotted by leaves turning reddish
in color and upon examination the,
small red spider mite can be seen
on the underside of the leaves. An
infestation of red spider can cause:
serious damage by defoliating the;
cotton plant. This pest can be con- ’
trolled by weekly applications of;
20 pounds of dusting sulfur per
acre.
Aphids are also causing some
damage. The presence of these can'
be determined by a deforming of
the leaves and also by the greasy
look of the leaves caused by the
aphids secreting; a substance known
as “honey dew.’’ This insect can ]
be controlled by the application of
15 pounds per acre of BHC.
Bollworms hollow out the
squares and bolls and ran be con
trolled by using dust containing
DDT at the rate of 1-1.5 pound of
technical DDT per acre.
