Over $4 Billion

Washington, July 1.—The gov
ernment overspent its income pre
cisely $4,016,640,378.10 in fiscal
1952, which ended yesterda> v
The statistics were announced
today by the Treasury.
Spending, soaring approximate
ly 50 per cent above the preceding
year, hit the highest total for any
year without an all-out war—
$66,145,246,957.62.
Tax receipts shot 29 per cent
above fiscal 1951 by rate hikes
and new levies, climbed 20 billion
dollars above the World War II
peak to an unprecedented $62,128,-
606,579.52.
The federal debt moved up to
$259,150,744,131.47 during the year
as the government borrowed to
meet expenses not covered by re
ceipts. That was still 20 billion |
below the wartime crest.

contest at a meeting in the Agri
cultural building recently, accord
ing to County Agent C. B. Cannon
Leslie Pugh was elected co-
chairman and Mrs. Susan Hall Ma
hon, selected secretary. Mrs. De
Loach is expected to appoint mem
bers of her committee in the near
future.
“Application blanks and regula-
tionstions to enter the county Maid
of Cotton contest may be obtained
from Mrs. DeLoach. All candidates
in the Maid of Cotton contest must
be unmarried, between the ages of
19 and 25 inclusive, and have been
born in a cotton growing stite. If
born in a cotton state other than
South Carolina, the person must
have been a bona fide resident of
South Carolina since January 1,
1952.
“She must be at least five feet
five inches tall and be willing to
abide by rules and regulations per
taining to the contest. The purpose
of the Maid of Cotton contest is to
stimulate interest in cotton wear
ing apparel.”
“This Maid of Cotton program is
one means of selling to the public
the value and use of cotton in
wearing apparels.”
