Kefauver In
Florida Address
Gainesville, Fla., April 25.—Sen.
Richard B. Russell wasted no time
today in lambasting Sen. Estes Ke
fauver as he opened a Florida bat
tle against his opponent in the
preferential primary.
Russell came here to bid for del
egates to the National [ Democratic
convention before a noisy crowd
on the court house square. Without
calling Kefauver by name, he said
the Tennesseean had the strong
backing of an organization ‘which
would submerge our sovereignty to
that of other countries.”
He said this was the Atlantic
Union. Russell held up the publica
tion of this organization and drew
laughter when he said “here is my
opponent riding to success on the
back of a whale with a new char
ter of government to supplant our
own Constitution under his arm.”
Russell said the Atlantic Union
would “write a new Constitution
that would supersede our own. It
would have a newrTlag to fly above
our own.”
In a sacractic manner, Rusell
criticized Kefauver for having a
“12-room suite right near the White
House. He quickly added “I’m
afraid that is as near as he will
get to it.”
