rector, General Motors Corp., is ex
ecutive offices, is secretary.
This is the way Dr. Hendricks
looks at the job:
On the basis of present medical
knowledge, it is impossible even
to identify the commoq cold. Phy
sicians and laymen apply the term
to various acute and chronic dis
orders of the air brassages. No one
knows what causes colds or how
they can be cured or prevented
Although certain drugs may sup
press symptoms, they do not alter
the course of the disease.
There were an estimated 400 mil
lion colds in the U. S. last year.
Colds and their complicating caus
ed more illness and disability than
all other diseases combined.
Because of colds, workers lost
an estimated one billion dollars in
wages in 1951. Manufacturers lost
two billion dollars worth of pro
duction. Non-manufacturing busi
ness lost an estimated $1,750,000,-
000 in services. Cold sufferers
spent 400 million dollars on drugs
and treatment.
The foundation is drawing up a
long-term plan to be guided by a
r. —-Directly- under
him will be medical and general
consultants, full-time specialists in
various medcial fields and a staff
of full-time scientists.
Here are sortie questions about
the common cold the foundation
hopes will be answered:
Is it caused by a ~ virus? Re
searchers disagree on this theory.
Does sudden chilling make nor
mal individuals susceptible?
Why do outbreaks of colds follow
sudden weather changes?
Do worry or grief affect the nose
and throat tissues.
Why do some families have colds
every year while some of their
neighbors escape?
Why do Eskimos in isolated areas
develop colds after contact with
apparently uninfected visitors?
Why does the same condition’
apply to isolated native tribes in
the tropics?
Experts do not look for a simple
solution. They believe a combiWb-
tion of many comlplex factors is
responsible for the widespread
disease. -
