centered around the state cohven-

would not support Mr. Truman on
certain conditions.
A lengthy battle before the cre

Democratic party was finally won
out by the State Democratic party's
delegates. A group of about eight
v.’hfite Democrats who termed
themselves party loyalists wanted
seats in the convention because
they were making an effort to car

On the other hands, 5r Negr6 deTe T

'Liberty Against •
Socialism' Is Issue
Betwen Parties—Taft
Houston, March, 10 — Senator
Robert- Taft (R-Ohio) tonight said
the one issue above all between
Republicans and Truman Demo
crats is “liberty against socialism.”
In a prepared speech at the City
auditorium climaxing a hectic day
of speeches, conferences and hand^
shaking, the Ohio senator spelled
out liberty as:
“The right of every man to think
his own thoughts and live his own
life; to' have his ideas taught if
anybody thinks they are worth
teaching. It means liberty of the
family to eat what they want for
breakfast, spend the income they
earn as they wish to spend it and
not have it taken away from them
by taxes to furnish government
services they miay or may not want,
and may or may not even get. It
means the liberty of every- com
munity to run its own affairs, to
determine how its children shall
be educated, its welfare services
conducted and its local government
run.”
He said “our progress and our
liberty are threatened by the
steady expansion of government.”
Taft is in Texas for a three-day
visit to push his campaign for the
Republican presidential n o m i n a-
tion.
In a speech at noon he said the
United States had to have a" sound 4
foreign policy because it is this that
today shapes every phase of domes
tic issues and put taxes in the fore-!
front.
Tonight he bore down on domes
tic policy.
He said the president’s call for
a budget of 85 billion dollars was
about 30 per cent of the income of
the people.
4
Thursday, March 13, 1952
“If we add 7 per cent for state
and local government that means
a total of 37 per cent,” he declared.
“My own view is that we can’t keep;
the free system going at all if gov
ernment takes more than about 25
per cent.
“Unless we can reduce 4he spend
ing and activity of the federal gov-
to a condition where all our lives
would t>e directed by the govern-
erhmeYft we will go on inevitably
ment,” he thundered.
“He said he strongly favored
“states ^rights,” especially in the
so-calleff tidelands case. In this he
would give the states control over
their marginal seas.
Taft said he had no doubt South
ern Democrats stand with the bulk
of the Republican party in the “de
mand that we resume progress in
this country under those principles
which lay at the very basis of the
declaration of independence and
the Constitution.”

Even though the National Demo
cratic convention makes the plat
form more attractive to the South
Carolina delegation, the state’s 16
votes will likely go to Senator Rus
sell anyway.
Many Southern states would
have accepted the platform as re-
ported by the platform committee
four years ago but "the convention!
saw fit to discard that platform and 1
insert FEPC and other civil rights
proposals. This even led the then
governor of Arkansas, Laney, toj
refuse to run on the Southern
ticket.
The National Democratic conven
tion in July should be more inter
esting in the past years because of
the several candidates seeking
nomination.'
