To start the new year, right with
livestock, C. B. Cannon, county
farm agent, suggests these ideas for
January: — > -
' Animal Husbandry
1. Graze winter forage crops with
beef cattle, hogs, and sheep. 2. Feed
out hogs for spring market. Balance
corn and other grains for hogs with
fish meal tankage, skim-milk, or .a
mixture of these animal proteins
with cottonseed meal or soybean
meal. 3. Make use of barley, rye,
oats and other small grain for hogs
and beef cattle grazing. 4. Where
winter grazing is scarce supply beef
cattle with cheap roughage. 5. For
fall calves turn bull with cows about
January 15. 5. Give idle mules free
access to pasture or roughage and
cut • the-grain ration to one-half or
less. 7. See that all classes of live
stock have shelter, with extra bed
ding for -cold nights. 8. Repair the
pasture fences. 9. Dust cattle with
powder containing 1 1-2 per cent
rotenone for lice and ox warbles on

special attention at laming time.

1. Select breeders for hatching
eggs. 2. Mate special breeding pen;

produce cockerels for next year’s
matings. 3. Provide breeders and
green range. 4. Get ready for baby
chicks, 5. Move brooder houses to
new ground before starting chicks.
6. Ask Clemson college for publica-!
tions on poultry to help make 1952
more profitable with poultry.
