To Give Christmas Play
The Church of God on Elizabeth
street will present a Christmas
play, “Why Christmas?” Sunday
December 23.

daughter, Betty, to Charles Shep
pard, on' December 9. The double
ring ceremony was performed by
Probate Judge Hewlett Wasson, in
Laurens. Mr. Shepparjd is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Sheppard of
this city. ;

Baptist Church
‘The Music of Christmas,” a can
tata by Ira B. Wilson, will be pre
sented Sunday evening, December
23, at 7:30 at Calvary Baptist
church under the direction of Mrs.
Joe Land. Everyone is welcome
to attend.
In a picturesque setting of blue
sky and evergreen will be spot
lighted scenes depicting the words
of the music as they are sung by a
maroon-robed choir of thirty voices
accompanied by Mrs- [, Vernon
Trammell at the piano and Mrs.
Bobby Boyce at the console of the
organ. As the music includes parts
of familiar carols, also will the tab
leau include the familiar manger
scene, the shepherds, the wise men
and the angels praising God and
singing “Glory be to God in the
Higest.”
To give the complete picture,
much preparation has been made.
To Mrs. J. V. Lowe, Mrs. J. L. Ar
nold, and Mrs. Eva West aided by
Glenn Downs, ( A G. Smith, R. T.
Trammell, D. F. Dunaway and P.
F. Smith goes the credit for the
decorations and scenery. The pag
eant is being directed by Mrs. Os
car Kinard, Mrs. Rufus King, and
Mrs. R. P. AmicR. Appropriate
costuming for the portrayal of the
characters has been done b y
Mrs. Jacks, Mrs. A. G. Smith and
Mrs. Ralph Riddle.
Eastern Stars Hold Annual
Christmas Banquet
The Order of Eastern Star gath
ered in formal attire for their an
nual Christmas banquet on Thurs
day evening December 13 at the
community building. 4 At 4 7:3(k they

of the traditional holiday greenery
were outstanding in the soft can
dle-light. Individual place cards
attached to red candles andi sprigs
of cedar added to the attractiveness
of the tables. A musical program
on the piano and solo vox was pre- 1
sented by Mrs. Joe E. Land and
her pupils throughout dinner.
After the meal all assembled* in
the parlor to hear Rev. J. W. Spill-
ers, phstor of Calvary Baptist
church, as the guest speaker. Gifts
which had been placed under the
tree earlier were then distributed.
Woman's Club Givaa Christmas
Dinner
Saturday evening, December 15,
the Community building saw
members and guests gathered for
the annual Christmas dinner of thi
Woman’s club. The tables were
with Christmas trees, snow scenes^
and other variety of Christmas dec
orations. At the places was the
program in a red bell wishing/each
person a Merry Christmas. " /
After singing “Joy to the World,”
and the invocation by Mrs. W. R.
Terry, all were seated to enjoy a
tasty dinner. Mrs. J. V. Lowe’s
welcome was answered by D. S.
Templeton, after which Mrs. Ray
mond Pitts brought a brief devo
tional on the theme of Christmas.
During the meal^a variety of
musical programs under the direc
tion of Mrs. Joe E. Land was pre
sented. Those taking part were the
Misses Ahna Spillers, Catherine
Dunaway, Joan Burgess, Margaret
Madden, Ann Middleton, Martha
Reeder, Shirley Hedspeth and Wal
lace Carr. This part of the program
was closed with a reading by Mrs.
Land which was given by special
request.
After the meal John Holland
Hunter gave a witty and interest
ing talk on “contentment.” All
joined in the singing . of “Silent
Night” at the close of thr evenlng^
Christmas Pageant at Bailey
Memorial Church
A Christmas pageant, “The Road
That Leads to Bethlehem,” by Dor
othy L. Sumerau, and Forrest G.
Walters, will be presented Saturday
evening, December/22, at 8 o’clock
at Bailey Memorial Methodist
church. The public is invited.
The white-robed choir under the
direction of Miss Marie Weir, as
sisted by Mrs. Joe E. Land, sings
the songs telling the wondrous'
story of the birth of Christ The
pageant, directed by Mrs. David
Word and Mrs. Marcelle Barker,
pictures the love of Nathan (Arthur
(Georgia Mae Hamilton) and their
journey to see Mary (Mrs. L. C.
Hamilton, Jr.) for his sister, Ruth
Fiddin) and the Christ Child. On
the way they meet the Wise Men,
portrayed by Dan Dimaway, Harold
Lawson and Wallace Terry who ac
company them to Bethlehem to
worship the Babe. Others in the
cast include Misses Dorothy Nor
ris, Carolyn Dunaway, Joan Can
non, Brenda Campbell and Don
Stewart
