I i X % Thursday, December 13, 1951 THE CLINTON CHRONICLE Page Three Murder Charged In Auto Death Ot Joanna Child Greenwood, Dec. 7. — Rudolph Richard Stone, 37-year-old South Greenwood man, was charged with murder Friday in the death of a three-months-old Joanna child who was a passenger in a car which was in collision with an automobile ac cident.” The car driven by Stone almost completely crossed the center line of the highway and hit the car driven by Allie B. Puckett, accord ing to testimony by Cpl. J. W. Led better of the State Highway Patrol. Corporal Ledbeter testified that when he saw Stone at the hospital shortly after the accident, Stone was, in his opinion, “in a very in toxicated condition.” He was lying on an ambulance stretcher in the lobby of the emergency room, Led better said, being held on the cot to keep him from getting up. He was using profanity profusely he said, and “the odor of alcohol was pre dominant on his breath.” Stone was admitted to the hospi tal, where he remained until Mon day, when he was taken into cus tody and placed in the county jail. The accident occurred at about 11:40 on the night of Nov. 24 near Sistare’s store about two-tenths of a mile outside the Greenwood city limits on the Laurens highway. Stone was traveling in the direc tion of Greenwood, the car driven by Puckett going toward Laurens. The right rear wheel of the Stone car was just about on the middle line, Ledbetter said, the remainder of the car being on the left side of the center line from the direction he was traveling. The accident occurred completely across the center line on Puckett’s side of the road, he said. A third accident occurred imme diately after the first collision when a car driven by William Rob ert Julian crashed into the Stone car. Ledbetter said that he was told by Julian that the right rear wheel of the Ston|f >a^ was^spicmi the pavemem, creating friction and sending up a cloud of smoke which looked like fog. He drove into the smoke thinking it was a light fog and hit the Stone car. The right rear tire of the Stone car was worn down to the fabric, Ledbetter tes tified. In answer to Coroner Wise, he stated that the weather was good on the night of the accident, and visibility and highway conditions were good No ofher witness testified at the inquest held this morning in the court house, but Coroner Wise read a statement from the coroner’s phy sician attributing cause of death of the child to “intra cranial hemor rhage sustained in an automobile accident.” The warrant charges that Ru dolph Richard Stone did, while un der the influence of intoxicating li quor, operate a motor vehicle in such reckless and careless disregard of the rights of others he caused his automobile to collide with an au tomobile driven by Allie B. Puck ett and as a result of said collision an infant child, Judy Elizabeth Smith, a passenger in the Puckett automobile, was killed.” Both Jesse J. Smith, father of the child who was killed in the acci dent, and W. E. Puckett, driver of the car, were at the inquest this morning, but neither took the stand. Both still bear marks from injuries received in the accident, Smith having an arm bound and Puckett facial scars. They are from Joanna. Mrs. Puckett and a daughter, Betty Jean Puckett, both were in jured in the accident. Betty Jean is still in the hospital, reported in good condition, and Mrs. Puckett was dischraged several days ago. Ammie Elliott, who lives opposite the site of the wreck, was injured in the crash of the third car, and received first aid. Driver of the third car was not injured.
