MEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN
MACHINES, BABSON DECLARES

Employers Should Take
Core To Have Their
Health Checked.
Babson Park, Mass., Oct. 9—The
Babson Organization has 2,000 cor
porations on its Master List which it
constantly watches. In other words,
out of the 16,000 corporations whose
securities are publicly traded in, we
select 2,000 which we believe to be
the cream.
Curing Slipping Departments
Notwithstanding our careful selec
tion, some of these corporations are
at times suffering
from one depart
ment slipping. This
naturally worries
the head of the de-
K artment. The more
e worries, the more
the department slips
and the more it
slips, the more he
worries. If this con
tinues too long he
has a nervous break-
* down or a heart at
tack. This is a loss to the corporation
and its stockholders.
The real purpose of my stonr is to
emphasize that men anymore import -
ant than machines—in~faet, all Thf\_
chines were invented by men and we
most depend upon men for coming
great inventions. I have in mind elec
tronic devices which should reduce j
prices and increase the wages of in
telligent workers. The value of fore
men and department heads is not ful
ly recognised by many corporations
Their accumulation of experience will
take many years on the part of their •
successors to duplicate
Rat Hied To Mere Re«t
Corporations judge employees hy
their hours of work and—directly or
indirectly—by their production in
physical Baits. But a department head
or foreman may he able to develop

complete rest for a month, the preot-
11.000 ea repair
dent often fails to see the point. Of
course, this rest must be away from
home and under supervision. Yet,
such an investment by the corporation
would prodtice more in dividends to
stockholders than if spent in any
other possible way. This is the next
great lesson which corporations must
learn.
Preventing Heart Attacks
During the past year, I have been
especially distressed because so many
of my friends and clients are dying
from heart attacks. This is not only
a loss to the family, but often a se
vere loss to the corporations with
which such men were connected. Often
the death of such a man is ultimately
unfavorably reflected in labor rela
tions, sales programs and the earn
ings of the corporations; and hence
a loss to stockholders. With special
interest in the 2,000 corporations
above mentioned, I am anxious for
the support of all attempts to reduce
these heart tragedies.
Doctors tell me that these heart at-
tacks are unnecessary and could
largely be prevented if corporations
would insist on annual physical aud
its of their head executives. When
finding one of their executives
threatened with a heart condition, the
corporation would find it an excellent
investment to give this executive a
supervised vacation with pay at a
restful spot catering to the “tired
businessman”. This is not charity or
of a “welfare” nature. It is sound,
hardboiled business sense.
Repairing Va. Preventive Testa
The so-called “six weeks cure” for
heart attacks can be taken at home
or at a hospital if the patient will
absolutely obey the doctor's orders;
hut this in not true of preventive
heart repairing. Those showing a ten
dency to heart trouble, hut who have
not yet been attacked, need not stay
IB bed. They should, however, he
away from home and otfice. in a rest
ful spot ia the woods until all these
symptoms vanish.
In this connection let ase say that
great progress Is being made hy
physician* in detecting possible heart
troubles The electro-cardiegraph ia
now being suppleawnted or antici
pated hy “flicker test#", blood tests
and ingeasous gadgets which give aa

apparently was the signal that the
Dixie contingent has decided Mr.
Truman has made up his mind to
run again. Otherwise, they would
not be out in the open now fight
ing a man they might get rid of
.next July.
The second phase of the anti-
Truman strategy apparently in
volves a wait of several weeks, un
til some time after the first of the
year, to see whether there is any
clear sign that Gen. Dwight D. Ei
senhower is to become the Repub
lican nominee. The Southerners
have cast aside as impractical any
efforts to draft Eisenhower in a
Democratic role.
If Eisenhower is to become the
Republican nominee, the Dixie
strategy will be built around a
doomed-in-advance effort to get the
Democratic convention to restore
the two-thirds nominating rule and
to convince it that it should soft
pedal the civil rights issue.

Washington. Oct • — If Presi
dent Truman chooses to run again
he will find a former fnend and
now an implacable polutcal op
ponent heading the drive withm
his partv to return him to private
life
Gov James F, Byrnes of Smith
Carolina, a 72-year-old scrapper
who is s graduate at the Roosevelt
school of politics, might even go
outside his party in his determined
effort to give the country a new
President in January, 1953
That part of the Truman-Bymes
story will not unfold — if it ever
does—until after next year’s Demo
cratic nomination convention.
The slight, white-haired Byrnes,
no lesc chipper than when he was
a senator, Supreme Court justice.
World War II mobilizer. and Mr.
Truman's Secretary of State, dem
onstrated at the annual, governors
conference in Gatlinburg. Tenn.,
that his is a fighting mood.
In what was a direct slap at the
President as an outwardly polite
politician can give. Byrnes told a
news conference he is for either
Senator Russell of Gerogia or Sen
ator Harry F. Byrd of Virginia for
the party's nominee,
v Battle Ultimatum
He said he felt Mr. Truman
would like to lay down the "bur
den’’ of his office, adding that in
his opinion the President would
recognize the "spirit” of the two-
term constitutional amendment,
although Mr. ruman is special
ly exempted from It.
This was a .cold-steel ultimatum
of battle, delivered in a typical
Byrnes South Carolina drawl, with
out heat and smilingly. But the
significance of it could not have
escaped the President or any of his
friends.
Byrnes means to fight to the last
ditch and his will be no heedless
half-effective bolt such as the
States Rights movement which took
the electoral votes of four states
away from the President in 1948.
The Byrnes board of-strategy re
volves around four men at this time
—himself, Byrd, Russell and Gov.
Herman E. Talmadge of Georgia.
Others Will be invited into the in
ner sanctum as time and develop
ments warrant.
The prelimyiary strategy of the
anti-Trumanites is to keep the
President from getting the nomina
tion again. They know they can’t
stop him if Mr. Truman wants to
go again, so they have been seek
ing in every way possible to get
the impression abroad that Mr.
Truman doesn’t w’ant to seek an
other term.

burg that he is for Russell or Byrd

GaU Bladder
Condition Corrected...
For twenty years I suffered with a gall
bladder condition. During the past few
years my condition grew progressively
worse and my blood pressure became
abnormal. I also had arthritis and consti
pation. I was never free of pain and I
had to take some kind of laxative to have
a bowel action. I was placed on a rigid
diet and advised to have my gall bladder
removed.
My condition was not improving. In
stead it was getting worse each day, so I
decided to consult Dr. C. J. Hart, Chiro
practor of Laurens, S. C. My first consul
tation with him was on July 14. 1951.
Afer a brief explanation of Chiroprac
tic, a Neurocalograph test was made.
X-rays were taken, and I was told to re
turn to his office the following day for
a complete analysis of my case, at which
time Dr. Hart told me he thought he
could help me The cause of my condi
tion was pointed out to me near the base
of the skull on the x-rays.
After a few adjustments I began to
feel much better. In less than sixty days
my gall bladder condition has cleared up
completely and my bowel movements are
normal and regular. All the pain from
my arthntu has disappeared and my
blood pressure has returned to normal. I
can say truthfully that I feel better than
1 have in years.
If every one would try Chiropractic first and not make the
error of trying it last as I did. there would be much less suf
fering and illness today. My advice to the people of this com
munity is to consult Dr Hart immediately
If you are suffering with gall bladder trouble, arthritis, ab
normal blood pressure or constipation, and it is your sincer**
desire to get the CAUSE of your trouble corrected, consult Dr
C. J. Hart. Laurens, S C Telephone 22501 for an appointment
