Thornwell Wins
Over Ford High

Laurens, Sept. 20.—Thornwell or
phanage defeated Ford high here
Thursday afternoon by a score of
27' to 0. The winners tallied all
their points in the first half and
Coach DicTempleton cleaned the
bench giving the second stringers
a chance at varsity play.
In the first three minutes of play
* nd Johnny Dowdle tackled a Ford
back in the end zone for two points.
Then two quick touchdowns were
scored before the end of the first
quarter.
Captain Bobby Dowdle skirted
left end for 25 yards and Jack
Brown went around the right side
from 20 yards out.
Thornwell kept going in the sec
ond period. Jimmy Simmons scor
ed his 19th point of thfe season with
a six-pointer and James Bartenfield
tallied the last marker and also;
ran the extra point.
Ford didn’t threaten throughout;
the game. The losers moved to the
Thornwell 30 once.
Defensive standouts for Thorn
well included Dock Stevens, Ben
Brockington, Lamar Lee at left
tackle and left end John Dowdle.
Howard Shaw played a terriffic
game at end.
Backing up the line with vicious
fury were Simmons and Brown and
the passing and kicking of Barten
field stood out.

Dr. Dunning was formerly a bar
rister (lawyer) and upon occasions,
still practices. He recently presid
ed over the high court in London.
He is shown here in his barrister’s
cloak and wig.
Prior to World War II, Dr. Dun-!
ning was minister of River Court
Methodist church in London where
he preached until the church was 1
partially destroyed by the blitz. At
that time he joined the Royal Air
Force as chaplain, where he serv
ed until assuming his duties at Ha
worth Hall. He is now Warder,
(president) of Haworth Hall, Uni
versity college, at Kingston-upon-
Hull, England, which is the Theo-
logilcal dpeartment of the Univer
sity. Dr. Dunning has traveled
around the world seven times.
Last Rites Held
For Noah H. Scott
Saturday, September 29
Noah H. Scott 73. died Saturday
afternoon at his home here after
several years of declining, health.
The funeral services were con
ducted Sunday afternoon from
Gray Funeral Home by the Rev
Hugh Hazel. Intrement followed
in Rosemont cemetery with neph
ews serving as pallbearers.
Surviving are four sons. F. C
Scott of Gastonia. N. C.. L. G Scott.
N T. Scott and B. F Scott of this
city; one daughter. Mrs. C. L. Cau
ble of this city: one brother, J. 0
Scott of Hones Path, one half
brother. John Scott, of Toccoa.
Ga . and several grandchildren
