Fort Jackson, Aug. 12.—The 31st
Division
now in training here is being

personnel for Korean replacements,
its commanding general said today.
“We naturally are terribly disap
pointed, but all of us in the divis
ion are determined that our strong
training program will overcome
our losses and that we’ll come out
of this situation in good shape,”

said this viewpoint was shared by!

Rising Prices, Deficits
Predicted By Economic
Experts To Congress
Washington, — The congressional
economic committee has * been
w’amed by its staff experts to ex
pect rising prices, more inflation
and three years of federal deficits.
The staff report was made public
today by Senator O’Mahoney (D-
Wyo), chairman of the senate-
house group. He called the com
mittee into closed door session “to
look otfer the situation as it now
exists and see the things that must
be done by congress.”
Main theme of the report ap
peared to be arguments in support
of:
1. A considerable higher increase
in federal taxes than the $7,200.-j
000,000 a year boost voted by the
house. Senators have been talking
of holding the increase to five or
six billions.
2. Stiffer government controls
over prices, wages and credit.
O’Mahoney, in advance of the,
committee discussion, told report

“My personal opinion is that the

fiscal year which ended last June

The staff report said “prices will
rise” as more of the national pro
duction is diverted late this year;
into defense goods.
It suggested a $10,000,000,000 tax
increase immediately, largely from
groups in the $3,000-$ 10,000 income
brackets.

Proposed Excise
Tax Will Force
Prices of Cars Up
If congress enacts into law the
proposed increase in excise taxes
on new automobiles, passed by the
house last month, the price of au
tomobiles will rise about $50, L. W.
Cooper, local area chairman for the
National Automobile Dealers asso
ciation, said yesterday.
The present discrimination is
made far greater by the house bill
which would raise manufacturers’
excise taxes on new automobiles
from 7 to 10 per cent. The bill low
