INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA
FIRST GOVERNOR OF SOUTH CAROLINA
JOHN RUTLEDGE
John Rutledge was for a brief period Chief Justice of the
United States. He became President of South Carolina in 1776-8,
and was made Governor January 9, 1779. Because of his mili
tary and political authority during the Revolution, he was called
Dictator Rutledge. During the battle for Charleston, Sgt. Jasper
risked his life to replace Fort Moultrie’s fallen flag. For this
gallant deed. Governor Rutledge presented Jasper his own sword.
