Jones Says Cotton
Farmers Undersold
On Price Support
Biiffii Announcements
Columbia, July 30.—State Commis-
’ v.oncr of Agriculture J. Roy Jones
i.mplained today that South Caro
lina and other cotton farmers had
lien undersold on price support by
U. S. Secretary of Agriculture Char
les F. Brannon.
Hf made his complaint in a letter
to Brannon, copies of which went to
the press and South Carolina mem
bers of congress and other Southern
state agriculture comnjissioners.
Jones' complaint was that farm
ers had expected a support price
( from the Department of Agriculture
at 00 per cent of the ceiling price es
tablished by, the Office of Price Sta
bilization, but that they have gotten
a support price instead of 90 per
ceivt of parity.
The ceiling price is 45.76 cents a
pound for 15-16s middling, whereas
paiiiy’s 90 per cent currently figures
to about 31.75 a pound—the govern
ment loan value for cotton.
Farmers feel that this year’s crop!
was planned as a defense project,”!
Jones said in his letter, and there- (
fore they "are justified in presum-'
ing" the price would be protected.
He said fertilization, insect control
and harvesting costs are higher than
ever, and that farmers spent money
on these expecting a crop price of 40
cents a pound.
Jones noted that the national de->
fensc act gives Brannon the power,
to call a defense council meeting and
reconsider the price arrangement.
He asked that this be done.
