The reporters have recorded more than 1,600,000 words, some of them highly secret, and the end is not in sight. They are nearing the 7,000-page mark. Senators can get a copy free after deletions by a sharp-eyed censor with a razor, but newspapers and news services pay 12 1-2 cents a page. . It looks like the bill for a single copy of the entire hearing might run up close to $1,000. One of the steady customers is the Russian news agency, Tass, which cables thousands of words daily to Communist leaders in Mos cow. Ward says it’s not the biggest re porting job he has handled but it’s the fastest-moving. “We have had transcripts out within 15 or 20 minutes after the words were spoken,” says Ward. He has a select group of six reporters taking the actual testimony in five to ten minute relays. All of them were carefully screened by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government agencies to make sure they will keep some of the nation’s greatest secrets. You think the MacArthur hear ings are long-winded? Ward can remember hearings by the National Recovery Administra tion back in early Roosevelt “New Deal” days which ran into some 300,000 pages.
